Basque Cheesecakes Are Taking the Food World by Storm

Cheesecakes are one of the most popular sweet treats on the market, especially since you don’t have to be a pro to make one. They’re usually topped with fruits, nuts, and whipped cream, but trendy Basque cheesecakes are flipping this formula on its head.

Basque cheesecakes are instantly recognizable thanks to their “burnt” top, but don’t let that trick you into thinking they’re not super-tasty. They are baked at a high temperature for a short time to achieve this look, but their interior is incredibly creamy and smooth.

Basque cheesecakes started popping up on our Instagram feed in the last few weeks, but food experts were aware of their existence for years. This tasty dessert has been around for 30 years, and La Viña Bar in San Sebastián, Spain has been credited for putting it on the map.

The overly dark and cracked top crust is the signature trait of this cheesecake, and you can find countless amazing recipes online. It may not look as Instagram-friendly as classic cheesecakes we’re used to, but it makes up for it with its delicious, molasses-like flavor.
