Netflix is yet to score its first best picture win at the Oscars and they have several worthy contenders in the running this year. Although the awards ceremony is still months away, experts are already predicting one of these movies could come out victorious.

Mank

After a long break, David Fincher is finally back with his passion project, based on the script that his late father wrote years ago. His latest movie Mank chronicles Herman J. Mankiewicz’s struggle to get credit as the screenwriter of Orson Welles’s masterpiece Citizen Kane.

The Trial of the Chicago 7

In his second directorial effort, the famed screenwriter Aaron Sorkin tackles the story of the Chicago Seven—a group of anti–Vietnam War protesters who were a part of a highly-publicized trial in the late ‘60s after being charged with conspiracy and inciting a riot.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

If his final role, Chadwick Boseman joins Viola Davis in this highly-anticipated biopic, based on the life of the singer Ma Rainey, known as the “mother of the blues”. The film is based on August Wilson’s play of the same name and experts are predicting Boseman and Davis will both receive Oscar nods for their powerhouse performances.

It’s rare to see celebrities re-wearing outfits or wearing recycled gowns on the red carpet, but at the 2020 Oscars, we saw the biggest A-listers making an effort to be more eco-friendly. The theme throughout the night was sustainability, and many stars took part in the trend, but these were our favorites.

Joaquin Phoenix

The Joker actor has been a big winner at the award ceremonies this year, and he’s actually worn the same Stella McCartney tuxedo suit to all the 2020 red carpets to promote sustainable fashion. This fits right in with his values, as he’s an environmentalist and animal rights supporter.

Elizabeth Banks

There’s finally proof that the Pitch Perfect star doesn’t age—she wore the same dress to the 2020 Oscars that she wore to the Vanity Fair Oscar party in 2004. Even 16 years later, Banks looks flawless in the red Badgley Mischka dress with a plunging neckline. The only thing the actress changed was the back of the dress, which is simplified without the crystallized details, and she switched up her jewelry.

Saorise Ronan

The Irish actor, who was nominated for Best Actress for her role in Little Women, wore a Gucci custom-made black and lavender dress, and the black part was made from re-purposed material from the BAFTA gown she wore last week.

Kaitlyn Dever

The Booksmart actress also wore an ethically-made Louis Vuitton dress, which was made with eco-responsible silk satin and featured Swarovski crystals and beads. Dever said on the red carpet that “I’m here supporting sustainable clothing. It’s really important.”

Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda is not only known for her acting, she’s also an activist. She presented the Best Picture award in an Elie Saab red-beaded dress with ethical jewelry, but it wasn’t just her accessories that were eco-friendly—she wore the same dress at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. Prior to the event, she captioned her Instagram post, “At Oscars wearing Pomellato jewelry, because it only uses responsible, ethically-harvested gold and sustainable diamonds.”

Sandy Powell

The costume designer of The Irishman first wore the cream suit to the BAFTAs before wearing it to the Oscars. She had celebrities like Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Saoirse Ronan, Woody Harelson, Scarlett Johansson, Margot Robbie, and Renée Zellweger sign the suit before it’s auctioned off to charity through the Art Fund in honor of her late friend and mentor Derek Jarman, a filmmaker and artist.
