Disney’s Wish hit the theaters just in time for Thanksgiving, but its box office numbers are anything but a dream come true. This animated fantasy movie is the latest Disney project to struggle at the box office, but what’s the reason behind its disappointing $49 million global gross?

Lack of Promo

The cast of Wish, including its leading stars Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine, had very little time to promote the film because it came out only two weeks after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Mixed Reception

The critics haven’t been kind to Wish after it came out, and the film currently holds a pretty low rating of 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. Disney wanted to use Wish to mark its 100th anniversary by tying together several major themes from most Disney films into one, but this led to a story that leaned too heavily into nostalgia and had nothing new to say.

Tough Competition

Wish finished third behind The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and Napoleon during its debut week, and failed to meet its projections with a disappointing $49 million earned globally. Songbirds & Snakes was definitely its toughest competition after becoming a huge word-of-mouth hit and exceeding its box office projections.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was always going to be the biggest film of the summer, but it still managed to exceed our wildest expectations. In less than three weeks, Barbie managed to break many important box office records, and we’re bringing you an overview of its biggest achievements.

Epic Domestic Opening

Barbie knocked it out of the park during its opening weekend, to score the largest domestic opening at the North American box office for a film directed by a woman, with $162 million earned in the U.S. and Canada.

Historic Non-Superhero Opening

Barbie also scored the largest global opening for any film that’s not a sequel, remake, or superhero property.

Barbillion

It was just a matter of time before Barbie joined the $1 billion club, and that moment came during its third weekend in the theaters. To make the whole thing even more impressive, Barbie is the first film by a solo female director to reach this mark.

Highest-Grossing Female Directed Film

Barbie also became the highest-grossing film by a solo female director, surpassing the record previously held by Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot—who was coincidently one of the stars considered for the role of Barbie.

Margot Robbie’s Highest-Grossing Film

Margot Robbie told studio executives that Barbie would make $1 billion in an early pitch meeting. Her prediction came true and Barbie quickly became the highest-grossing film of her career, easily surpassing Suicide Squad.

Cinemas around the world have been suffering since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, with box office numbers dropping to new lows. We’ve been waiting for one movie that has the power to “save the cinema” for over a year now, but could Godzilla vs. Kong be that movie?

This highly-anticipated monster movie is currently the highest-grossing film of 2021 in the U.S. By this point, it already earned $358 million on the international box office, and it’s only surpassed by Chinese comedies Hi, Mom and Detective Chinatown 3.

After less than a month in the theaters, Godzilla vs. Kong is close to earning more than Christopher Nolan’s Tenet—the movie that was supposed to reawaken our passion for movie theaters. Calling it the first pandemic box office hit wouldn’t be an understatement, but how exactly did it earn that title?

Godzilla vs. Kong may be mindless fun, but that’s exactly what we need right now. After a year of not going to the cinema, moviegoers just want to watch two monsters going head to head. Box office numbers for movies in this franchise have always been high due to its universal appeal. The generally positive reviews also don’t hurt its case, and it’s not surprising that people from all around the world flocked to see it and escape real-life disasters for two hours.

There are so many blockbuster movies which gross billions of dollars all over the world. However, there are some which were equally-expensive to make but ended up becoming huge letdowns.

1. Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (2007)

The budget for this movie was $60 million and the estimated loss was around $125 million. A film by DreamWorks Animation, this movie had a star-studded cast. But even the likes of Brad Pitt, Michelle Pfeiffer, and more couldn’t make it a hit.

2. Sahara (2005)

The budget for this movie was $130 million and the estimated loss was around $105 million. This movie was actually an attempt at kick-starting a new franchise similar to Indiana Jones. But the movie had so many issues even before it came out.

3. Evan Almighty (2007)

The budget for this movie was $175 million and the estimated loss was around $90 million. This came out after the movie Bruce Almighty, which was a smash hit. Unfortunately, this movie starring Steve Carrel fell short and lost a lot of money.

These weren’t the only ones which flopped at the box office. The list also includes The Alamo (2004), Poseidon (2006), Speed Racer (2008), Land of the Lost (2009), How Do You Know (2010), and more. The list just keeps going on.
