Detroit Lions made a surprising move on Monday, deciding to part ways with starting safety Jayron Kearse with one game remaining on their schedule.

Kearse made seven starts and played 11 games with Detroit since signing with the team in the offseason. He performed well, recording 59 tackles, two pass deflections, and one forced fumble in 2020.

The Lions most likely made the decision because they want to give more playing time to their younger players. This includes 2018’s third-round pick Tracy Walker and last year’s third-round selection Will Harris. Both players were heavily featured in last week’s game against Tampa Bay Buccaneers and are expected to play most of the snaps in Week 17 against Minnesota Vikings.

Kearse, on the other hand, will most likely get an opportunity to play meaningful football for the remainder of the season elsewhere. Playoff-bound teams are expected to give him a look, and he could easily be on a roster once the postseason kicks off.

Before joining the Lions, Jayron Kearse spent the first four years of his career with the Minnesota Vikings. He played 62 games in Vikings’ jersey, totaling 79 tackles, eight pass deflections, one interception, and 0.5 sacks.

Detroit Lions’ fans won’t be happy to hear this, but one of team’s biggest legends, wideout Calvin Johnson, wished he could’ve played for their bitter divisional rivals Green Bay Packers.

Johnson revealed this during a recent appearance on Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes’ All The Smoke podcast.

Asked about the one quarterback he wished he could play with, Johnson immediately opted for Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers. The six-time Pro Bowler even admitted that he told Rodgers this multiple times during Lions vs. Packers games.

“Whenever we played Green Bay, whenever Aaron Rodgers was over on our sideline he would say, ‘Hey man, you need to come on over here.’ And I said, ‘I wish I could,'” shared Johnson.

Calvin Johnson played nine seasons in NFL and spent all of them with Detroit Lions, who took him No. 2 in the 2007 draft. During his time in the league, Johnson was considered one of the best and frequently the best wide receiver in the game.

Johnson still holds NFL records for most receiving yards in a season with 1,964 and most consecutive 100-yard receiving games with eight. He retired with 731 career receptions for 11,619 yards and 83 touchdowns.
