Michaela Coel, the creator, writer, and star of the acclaimed HBO series I May Destroy You made history this Sunday at the 73rd Annual Emmy Awards. Coel won her first Emmy for best writing in a limited series or anthology and she is the first-ever black woman to win this writing award at the Emmys. Also up for the award were Mare of Eastown, The Queen’s Gambit, and three episodes of WandaVision.

I May Destroy You premiered on HBO during the summer of 2020. The show follows Arabella, a young writer struggling with the aftermath of a sexual assault and is inspired by Coel’s own experiences. Her acceptance speech was brief yet powerful: “Write the tale that scares you, that makes you feel uncertain, that isn’t comfortable. I dare you.” She ended her speech by dedicating I May Destroy You to “every single survivor of sexual assault.”

The writer-director-actress was also nominated in the best directing and acting categories for limited series but only won the writing category. I May Destroy You is currently streaming on HBO Max.

We spent this spring obsessing about Tiger King, Normal People, and The Great, but summer is finally here, and so are some amazing new shows everyone is talking about—including these five.

I May Destroy You

Michaela Coel’s BBC dramedy follows an aspiring writer dealing with the aftermath of a traumatic assault. It’s one of the most buzzed-about shows of the year, and it’s even gotten Adele’s seal of approval.

Love, Victor

The TV reboot of the hit teen rom-com Love, Simon was a long time coming, and it follows a whole new set of characters at Creekwood High School.

Cursed

The jury is still undecided on this female-centered retelling of the Arthurian legend, but it’s a high-budget fantasy series on Netflix, so millions of people are already tuning in to watch it.

The Baby-Sitters Club

The Baby-Sitters Club has been adapted on several occasions in the past. That didn’t stop Netflix’s latest remake from getting rave reviews and being described as the best adaptation yet.

Perry Mason

HBO’s new period drama follows the adventures of defense attorney Perry Mason, played by Matthew Rhys. It had the strongest HBO debut in two years, so it’s definitely doing something right.
