The number of head coaching vacancies in the NFL is growing by the day. After the NY Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars fired their coaches in recent days, the Los Angeles Chargers decided to make the same move on Monday.

The Chargers confirmed on social media that the franchise fired Anthony Lynn, ending his four-year stint as the team’s head coach.

According to a statement from owner Dean Spanos, the organization made the move because “the results of the past two years have fallen short of expectations.”

Lynn’s firing was somewhat expected as the team struggled early in the season despite a talented roster and showed the inability to win close games. The Chargers did finish the regular season with a four-game winning streak, but this ultimately wasn’t enough for Lynn to keep his job.

The Chargers shouldn’t have a problem generating interest in their job thanks to rookie quarterback Justin Herbert’s stellar performances in 2020. Herbert threw for 4,336 yards in 15 games as a starter while setting NFL-rookie-record 396 completions and 31 touchdown passes.

Anthony Lynn took over as LA Chargers’ head coach in 2017. After a 9-7 campaign in his first season at the post, Lynn led the Chargers to a 12-4 finish in 2018 and an appearance in AFC Divisional Game.

Unfortunately for Lynn, things went downhill from there, as Chargers went 5-11 in 2019 and 7-9 this season.

LA Chargers’ offense might get a big boost for the tough contest against Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Chargers plan to activate their No. 1 running back Austin Ekeler from the Injured Reserve list at some point this week. He is cleared for practice and could be included in the roster against the Bills if he shows enough progress.

This would be the first time for Ekeler to step on the field since suffering a hamstring injury in Week 4. Up to that point, the 25-year-old player had averaged 5.1 yards per carry while rushing for 248 and a touchdown. He was also a factor in the passing game, managing 17 catches for 144 yards.

In Austin Ekeler’s absence, the Chargers turned to an RB committee consisting out of 2020’s fourth-round pick Joshua Kelley and pair of third-year players in Justin Jackson and Kalen Ballage. However, neither of them managed to step up to give the team a reliable running game. Jackson was arguably the trio’s best, averaging 4.1 yards per carry, while Ballage and Kelly have 3.7 and 3.1, respectively.

The return of Ekeler will help the Chargers establish a more efficient rushing offense while also helping with quarterback Justin Herbert’s workload.

Chargers are currently sitting at the bottom of AFC West with 3-7 record.

Tennessee Titans didn’t waste time addressing struggling secondary after an unexpected 31-20 loss to Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. The team announced on Monday that they have acquired veteran corner Desmond King in a trade with LA Chargers.

According to the details of the transaction, the Chargers will receive a six-round pick in 2021 in exchange.

King is a welcomed addition to Titans’ defense and should see extended action considering the team’s struggles at the position. Tennessee has been without starter Adoree’ Jackson so far in 2020, while his replacement, rookie Kristian Fulton, recently landed on injured reserve with a knee injury.

“He’s a player that we felt like could help us, come in and play DB. He’s been disruptive. He’s an effective blitzer and has done some things,” said Titans’ head coach Mike Vrabel when asked to comment on the team’s most recent addition. “From everything that we’ve heard, he’s a player that loves football and is competitive that has played in a number of spots and in the kicking game.”

Desmond King has been prominently used by Charges in the past, missing all but one game in his first three seasons in the league. This year, however, King saw a decrease in the number of snaps he was on the field and was even a healthy scratch in the Week 8 game against the Denver Broncos.

In six games he played this season, King had 24 tackles, 1.0 sacks, and one QB hit.
