The Academy Awards are only three weeks away, and winners in some categories are still too difficult to predict. The SAG Awards provided both clarity and confusion and gave us several surprising wins that could change the course of this year’s Oscar race.

Best Leading Actress – Viola Davis

This year’s race for the best leading actress is more unpredictable than ever, and we haven’t had a clear front-runner from the get-go. Viola Davis’ chances are looking good after she won a SAG Award for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, but she still has a tough competition in Carrey Mulligan and Frances McDormand.

Best Supporting Actress – Youn Yuh-Jung

The race for best-supporting actress is equally tense, with Maria Bakalova’s and Olivia Colman’s names being thrown around as major contenders. However, after SAG Awards, it seems that will see Minari’s Youn Yuh-Jung walk away with the trophy come Oscar night.

Best Picture – The Trial of the Chicago 7

Nomadland is the clear front-runner for the best picture Oscar this year, but we’ve seen unexpected movies swoop in and win this award in the past. The Trial of the Chicago 7 is one of the main contenders to pull an upset at the Academy Awards, especially after winning the trophy for the best acting ensemble in the motion picture at the SAG Awards.

After months of anticipation, the Academy Award nominations are finally in, with Mank leading the way with 10. The contenders were pretty easy to predict in certain categories, but the list of this year’s Oscar nominees still brought a couple of snubs and surprises our way.

Snub: Da 5 Bloods (Multiple Categories)

Spike Lee’s latest movie Da 5 Bloods has been a dark horse since the beginning of the race, but seeing it only receive a nomination for the best original score was still a huge disappointment.

Surprise: LaKeith Stanfield (Best Supporting Actor)

Daniel Kaluuya is the front-runner in the best-supporting actor category with Judas and the Black Messiah, but it was a delight to see his co-star LaKeith Stanfield finally get some attention, as well.

Snub: Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (Best Picture)

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom received a total of five Oscar nominations, including two acting nods for Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis, but it was shut out of the best picture category.

Surprise: Thomas Vinterberg (Best Director)

Another Round was always a lock for best foreign film nomination, but we didn’t expect to see Thomas Vinterberg take a best director nod for more obvious contenders, including Regina King and Aaron Sorkin.

Snub: One Night in Miami (Multiple Categories)

Speaking of Regina King, her feature debut One Night in Miami failed to get nominated for best picture and best director, while Leslie Odom Jr. ended up being the only cast member to receive an acting nod.

Netflix is yet to score its first best picture win at the Oscars and they have several worthy contenders in the running this year. Although the awards ceremony is still months away, experts are already predicting one of these movies could come out victorious.

Mank

After a long break, David Fincher is finally back with his passion project, based on the script that his late father wrote years ago. His latest movie Mank chronicles Herman J. Mankiewicz’s struggle to get credit as the screenwriter of Orson Welles’s masterpiece Citizen Kane.

The Trial of the Chicago 7

In his second directorial effort, the famed screenwriter Aaron Sorkin tackles the story of the Chicago Seven—a group of anti–Vietnam War protesters who were a part of a highly-publicized trial in the late ‘60s after being charged with conspiracy and inciting a riot.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

If his final role, Chadwick Boseman joins Viola Davis in this highly-anticipated biopic, based on the life of the singer Ma Rainey, known as the “mother of the blues”. The film is based on August Wilson’s play of the same name and experts are predicting Boseman and Davis will both receive Oscar nods for their powerhouse performances.
