Netflix is yet to score its first best picture win at the Oscars and they have several worthy contenders in the running this year. Although the awards ceremony is still months away, experts are already predicting one of these movies could come out victorious.

Mank

After a long break, David Fincher is finally back with his passion project, based on the script that his late father wrote years ago. His latest movie Mank chronicles Herman J. Mankiewicz’s struggle to get credit as the screenwriter of Orson Welles’s masterpiece Citizen Kane.

The Trial of the Chicago 7

In his second directorial effort, the famed screenwriter Aaron Sorkin tackles the story of the Chicago Seven—a group of anti–Vietnam War protesters who were a part of a highly-publicized trial in the late ‘60s after being charged with conspiracy and inciting a riot.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

If his final role, Chadwick Boseman joins Viola Davis in this highly-anticipated biopic, based on the life of the singer Ma Rainey, known as the “mother of the blues”. The film is based on August Wilson’s play of the same name and experts are predicting Boseman and Davis will both receive Oscar nods for their powerhouse performances.

There’s something to be said about the classics and in 2020, films are going back to old Hollywood and being reinvented for modern times. It started with 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood which took place in 1960s Los Angelos and Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt starred as washed-up actors who were trying to make a name for themselves. Based on the success of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, many films are revisiting classic Hollywood and these are the ones you should check out ahead of awards season.

Rebecca

Based on the 1938 novel of the same name by Daphne du Maurier, the film was first released in 1940 and has since been adapted many times. The 2020 Netflix adaptation is the latest and it’s based on a newly married women who arrives at her husband’s estate and ends up being haunted by her husband’s first wife, Rebecca. The film stars Lily James, Armie Hamemr, Kristen Scott Thomas, Tom Goodman-Hill, Keeley Hawes, Sam Riley, and Ann Dowd.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

This film takes place in 1927 Chicago and it’s about Ma Rainey (Viola Davis) and other Black musicians who struggle with race, music, relationships, and the exploitation of Black recording artists. This also happens to be Chadwick Boseman’s, who plays the horn player, last film. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom will be released on December 18.

Mank

Mank follows Oscar-winning Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman J Mankiewicz and the development of the Orson Welles classic. Gary Oldman stars as the social critic and alcoholic screenwriter, Mank, who revaluates 1930s Hollywood and tries to finish the Citizen Kane script. The black and white film will be released in select theaters in November and will be available for streaming on Netflix on December 4.

Hollywood always had a soft spot for movies about filmmaking, awarding The Artist and Birdman with an Oscar for the best picture during the 2010s. This genre isn’t going anywhere, and it’s becoming even more popular, with several projects about the making of beloved classics in development these days.

The first film that comes to mind is David Fincher’s upcoming passion project Mank. It chronicles the creative battle that went on between Herman J. Mankiewicz and Orson Welles behind the scenes of Citizen Kane, often hailed as the best movie of all time.

This is not the only making-of film about a timeless classic coming our way. Oscar Isaac and Jake Gyllenhaal are tapped to play Francis Ford Coppola and Robert Evans in Barry Levinson’s Francis and the Godfather. This project is expected to capture “the madness of production” that went into the making of the ‘70s classic The Godfather.

Last year has given us several movies about filmmaking—both real (Dolemite Is My Name) and fictional (Pain and Glory). Now, biopics about Elizabeth Taylor (A Special Relationship) and Marilyn Monroe (Blonde) are also on the way, and they’re joining Mank and Francis and the Godfather on the list of highly-anticipated projects about classic Hollywood.

It’s never too early to start predicting the next year’s Oscar winners, but the race usually heats up during the fall’s festival season. The first major contenders are emerging, and Nomadland established itself as the most serious candidate after two major festival wins.

This poignant drama about an elderly woman who becomes a van-dwelling modern-day nomad stars Frances McDormand, and it had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. It was instantly met with critical acclaim and went on to win the Golden Lion.

After winning in Venice, Nomadland also won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival, becoming the first film in history to pick up top awards at both festivals. Many movies that won big at TIFF, including Green Book and 12 Years a Slave went on to win the best picture at the Oscars, so could Nomadland be the next one in line?

The race is still too early to call, and many other top Oscar contenders still haven’t seen the light of day. Nomadland is a huge hit with art-house lovers, but we’re yet to see if the Oscar voters will respond to its slow pace.

David Fincher’s passion project Mank could stand a much better chance because Academy members have a habit of going for movies about filmmaking. An Oscar victory is also long-overdue for Fincher, but it’s too early to judge this movie since the critics are yet to see it.
