All-star outfielder George Springer, one of the most coveted free agents this offseason, has made a decision about his future. According to multiple reports, Springer agreed to a six-year deal with Toronto Blue Jays.

Springer will reportedly earn $150 million, which makes his deal the largest in Blue Jays’ history by a total value. The franchise previously never handed out a deal that was worth more than $126 million.

The news is expected to become official in the coming days as the 31-year-old all-star has to have a physical with the team before the agreement becomes official.

Springer had a productive campaign during the shortened 2020 MLS season, managing to hit 14 home runs for Houston Astros while batting .265 with 32 RBIs. He also added four homers in the postseason and finished ninth in AL MVP voting.

The productive year positioned George Springer for a big payday this offseason, and he decided to make the most of it. He first declined Astros’ $18.9 million qualifying offer for 2021 and then managed to get a huge deal in a tough market.

The move could work well for Blue Jays, who now have a legitimate star that can help them make a deep playoff run. They will also further boost an already productive outfield that had 40 home runs in 2020.

Springer spent his entire MLB career with the Astros, debuting for the franchise in 2014. He led the team to World Series in 2017, winning the World Series MVP award in the process. He also has three All-Star nods and two Silver Slugger Awards.

All-MLB infielder DJ LeMahieu won’t be leaving New York anytime soon. LeMahieu reportedly agreed to a new six-year deal with the Yankees that will see him stay with the franchise through the 2026 MLB season.

LeMahieu became a free agent this offseason after rejecting an $18.9 million qualifying offer from the Yankees. Still, both sides were committed to extending the 32-year-old infielder’s tenure with the organization and have managed to come to a deal in recent days.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, LeMahieu will earn $90 million in the next six years according to the terms of the deal. His previous contract was for two years and $24 million.

DJ LeMahieu was one of Yankees’ best players in the shortened 2020 MLB season, leading the MLB with a .364 batting average while adding 10 homers and 27 RBIs. This brought him a third-place finish in the AL MVP Award voting.

By getting LeMahieu on a long-term contract, NY Yankees sorted out their biggest task this offseason. The franchise is now expected to improve their rotation and add reliable arms behind ace Gerrit Cole. Several names are reportedly on the Yankees shortlist, including two-time CY Young Award winner Corey Kluber, who is currently a free agent, and Pittsburgh Pirates’ starter Joe Musgrove.

Blake Treinen signed with the Dodgers ahead of the 2020 MLB season and enjoyed a productive campaign after struggling in the past several years. Treinen was 3-3 in 27 games he played while posting a respectable 3.86 ERA and having 22 strikeouts. He also proved useful during the playoffs, recording a save and striking out five in World Series against Tampa Bay Rays.

By holding onto Treinen, the Dodgers managed to keep their championship bullpen largely intact for 2021. The only major departure is lefty Jake McGee, who entered the free agency, but the team compensated for that with the addition of All-Star Corey Knebel.

Veteran pitcher Phil Hughes, who suited up for the NY Yankees, the Minnesota Twins, and the San Diego Padres during his MLB career, has officially announced his retirement from baseball. The announcement comes two years after Hughes made his last pitch in the majors.

“While it’s been fairly apparent to most over these last couple years, I’d like to officially announce my retirement from baseball,” Hughes wrote in a statement posted on Twitter.

Hughes last suited up for the Padres, playing three innings as a reliever on August 8th, 2018, against the Milwaukee Brewers. He struggled during his time on the mound and was released a week later.

Phil Hughes is best known for his time with Yankees, playing for the organization between 2007 and 2013. During that time he helped the franchise win World Series while earning an All-Star nod in 2010 after posting 18-8 record in 29 starts.

Hughes left the Yankees in 2014 to sign with the Twins. He had a promising start of his time in Minnesota, finishing the season with 16-10 while posting 3.52 ERA and having a career-high 186 strikeouts.

But Hughes didn’t maintain this level of play as he dealt with multiple injuries in the following years that caused him to miss significant time. He also failed to be productive while on the field, which caused the teams to be wary about signing him and ultimately got him out of the league.

The Tampa Bay Rays are moving from another key piece of the team that made the World Series last season. According to multiple reports, the Rays are close to trading ace pitcher Blake Snell to the San Diego Padres.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the Padres agreed to pay a steep price for Snell, sending pitching prospects Luis Patino and Cole Wilcox and catchers Francisco Mejia and Blake Hunt to Tampa Bay.

The deal is expected to be official once all the players go through medical reviews.

Padres have been aggressive in acquiring a star pitcher this offseason, exploring deals for Chicago Cubs’ All-MLB right-hander Yu Darvish and Cincinnati Reds’ All-Star Sonny Gray. However, their focus turned to Snell once it became clear that the Rays were willing to deal him.

Snell made his MLB debut in 2016 and has a 42–30 career record with 3.24 ERA and 648 strikeouts. He is a one-time All-Star and has won an AL Cy Young Award back in 2018.

With Snell as a headliner now, Padres are set to have a strong rotation that also includes Dinelson Lamet, Zach Davies, and Chris Paddack.

While losing a star starting pitcher is never easy, the Rays can be happy with the return for Snell.

Patino headlines the haul, being considered one of the most promising pitching talents in recent years. In his three seasons in minors, he had a 16-13 record with 2.35 ERA and 279 strikeouts.

Mejia is also a good pickup, being a powerful switch-hitter that can contribute right away, while Wilcox and Hunt might be starting-caliber players if they continue to develop.

Veteran right-hand pitcher Daniel Mengden will continue his baseball journey in South Korea, where he signed a one-year deal with Kia Tigers.

Reportedly, Mengden will earn a base salary of $425,000 in 2021 while also receiving a signing bonus of $300,000. He can push his earnings to $1 million with incentives.

The Tigers, who are 11-time Korean Series champions, confirmed the deal on their social media on Friday.

Mengden was limited by injuries in 2020, playing only four games last season with Oakland Athletics and managing 3.65 ERA and 10 strikeouts. He opted to become a free agent this offseason after the team decided there is no place for him on their 40-man roster and designated the 27-year-old player for assignment.

It isn’t a surprise that Mengden chose to play overseas, as he would probably be a long-shot to make the MLB roster to start the 2021 season. In Korea, however, he will be guaranteed to play and might resurrect his career enough to get another chance in the United States.

Daniel Mengden was drafted in the fourth round of the 2014 MLB Draft by Houston Astros but ended up being traded to Oakland as part of the Scott Kazmir trade. Mengden made his majors debut in 2016 and has since played 60 games (48 starts).

Mengden’s MLB career stats include a 17-20 record, 4.67 ERA, and 221 strikeouts.

For pitchers, Tommy John surgery usually means 12 to 14 months of downtime, but it appears that Houston Astros’ ace Justin Verlander believes he can beat that timeline.

Verlander underwent the procedure in September, which puts him on pace to miss the entire 2021 MLB season. However, according to Houston’s general manager James Click, the 37-year-old All-Star still “has every intention of trying to come back next year.”

“I think that would be an aggressive timetable, but we’re not taking anything off the table when it comes to a guy like that,” said Click in a chat with reporters on Thursday.

Verlander had a season to forget in 2020, as he managed to play six innings on Opening Day before being removed from the contest due to a strained forearm. He initially intended to return towards the end of the season, but further tests showed that he needs surgery in order to remove the discomfort in his pitching arm.

After several disappointing seasons, Justin Verlander managed to resurrect his career since joining the Astros in 2017. Verlander helped the franchise to a World Series win in his first year in Houston and went on to make consecutive All-Star appearances in 2018 and 2019. He also won his second AL Cy Young Award in 2019.

Verlander is set to become a free agent after the 2021 MLB season. He signed a two-year, $66 million extension with the Astros back in early 2019.

After spending the 2020 season playing in South Korea, Chris Flexen is back to Major League Baseball. According to multiple reports from around the league, Flexen agreed to a deal with Seattle Mariners.

Flexen’s contract is reportedly on two years and will see him $4.75 million. The move is expected to become official after the 26-year-old right-hander undergoes his physical.

ESPN’s Buster Onley also adds that Mariners will have a club option to keep Flexen for 2023 MLB season for $4 million.

Chris Flexen made his MLB debut in 2017 with NY Mets and went 3-11 in his first three seasons. He also posted an 8.07 ERA with 49 strikeouts before being designated for assignment at the end of the 2019 campaign.

Following his struggles in the majors, Flexen decided to head to South Korea where he signed with KBO’s Doosan Bears. It was a smart move, as he emerged as one of the league’s best pitchers in 2020.

Flexen made 21 starts with Bears, finishing the year 8-4 and boosting a 3.01 ERA with 132 strikeouts.

This positioned him to resurrect his MLB career as he now has a chance for a do-over with Mariners, who will most likely use him as one of their starting pitchers.

The Chicago White Sox made a major addition to their rotation on Tuesday, acquiring right-hand pitcher Lance Lynn from Texas Rangers.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the White Sox sent pitcher Dane Dunning and lefty prospect Avery Weems to Rangers in exchange for Lynn.

White Sox have been on the market for another starting pitcher for some time, wanting to bolster their rotation and provide support to standouts Lucas Giolito and Dallas Keuchel. While Chicago first attempted to strike a deal with Cincinnati Reds for Sonny Gray, they shifted their focus to Lynn in recent days.

Lynn, who was an All-Star back in 2012, is coming off a productive 2020 MLB season in which he led the league in pitched innings. He was also in the Cy Young conversation for a while, finishing the year with a 6-3 record to go with 3.32 ERA and 89 strikeouts.

Despite his stellar performances, Rangers still opted to make Lance Lynn available in trades as they are heading towards a rebuild. They were looking to get some talented young players in return while also getting off his $9.33 million salary in 2021.

Texas certainly accomplished their goals in the trade with White Sox, as Dunning and Weems both have a significant upside.

Dunning, a first-round pick in 2016, made seven starts in 2020 and pitched well. The 25-year-old had a 2-0 record with 3.97 ERA and 35 strikeouts.

Weems, on the other hand, had a 2.09 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 14 starts in minors last year.

Veteran outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. still remains a free agent, but this isn’t because there is a lack of interest in his services.

Speaking on CBS Sports’ Fantasy Baseball, Bradley gave an update on his free agency and said that there are multiple teams that reached out to him in recent weeks. “I definitely have been able to hear from a couple of teams,” said Bradley. “That’s good to know that there’s definitely interest—and interest from multiple teams.”

Bradley added that he isn’t in a hurry to land a deal, opting to remain patient in a “slow” baseball offseason.

Previous reports indicated that Houston Astros made Bradley their priority in the offseason, seeing him as a perfect replacement for departing George Springer. Houston, however, is reportedly set to receive competition from Toronto Blue Jays and NY Mets.

It’s not impossible that Jackie Bradley Jr. will remain with Boston Red Sox, where he spent his entire MLB career so far. Red Sox already informed Bradley that they want to keep him and have offered the 30-year-old a new long-term deal.

Bradley won a World Series title with Boston in 2018 while also earning one All-Star nod during his time with the organization. His career stats include a .239 batting average with 98 home runs and 376 RBIs. Bradley was especially productive in the shortened 2020 MLB season, hitting a career-high .283 with seven homers and 22 RBIs.
