]]>Have you heard of the “shullet”? It’s a take on the mullet and it combines two of the most popular hair trends of the year—the mullet and shag. In case you missed it, the mullet was all over the red carpet at the VMAs with Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish, and Bretman Rock among the many celebrities rocking the controversial cut. And the shullet is the less dramatic take on the shag and mullet.
The shullet is long and almost overgrown in the back and a lot shorter in the front. The length of the top is longer than a classic mullet and unlike the shag, which has bands and layers on top that are mid-length, the shullet’s layers on top are very short and don’t blend into the back.
The trendy new cut is the perfect way to try out the mullet and shag, but without fully committing to either one. You can say it’s a hybrid cut. It still packs a statement as it’s much more dramatic than the normal fall haircuts, but it’s more low-key than the mullet and shag.

The mullet was made cool by stars in the ’70s like David Bowie. But since then, it hasn’t been as popular. The hairstyle is all about playing up layers and texture. And coming out of lockdown, the mullet is perfect for embracing the long back and sides we haven’t been able to get cut.
Even celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Zendaya, Billie Eilish, Kesha, Maisie Williams, and Barbie Ferreira have tried out the hairstyle that was once rocked by Jane Fonda and Stevie Nicks.
The 2021 mullet has gotten a Gen Z makeover as it’s more tapered and softer than the ones we’re used to seeing. It’s still giving us major retro vibes. The look is bold, daring, and a bit rebellious, so if you’re wanting to make a statement, mullets are the way to go. The key to the haircut is having the hair longer in the back with lots of texture, especially on top.
