Netflix is synonymous with entertainment because we use it to watch everything from movies and TV shows to reality series and true-crime documentaries. The content you can find on this streaming service is extremely versatile, and Netflix bosses are trying to expand it by adding video games to the mix.

According to a recent report by Bloomberg, video games will appear as a new genre on the platform sometime next year. To make the whole thing even better, this outlet reports that Netflix won’t be charging extra for access to the games.

This may seem like an odd choice at first glance, but Bloomberg Intelligence’s media analyst Geetha Ranganathan described it as “a natural extension” of Netflix’s content strategy because it will make it possible to mine intellectual property from popular shows and deepen engagement.

Another reason why we’re not surprised by the news is Netflix’s previous efforts to find a link to the multibillion-dollar video game industry. This streaming service already has several video game-themed TV shows in development, including Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed, and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell. Their future is still hanging in the air, but Netflix’s interest in them shows their commitment to profit off of the gaming world.
