If you watched the New York Giants’ game against the Washington Redskins on Sunday, you might have noticed that left tackle Andrew Thomas was nowhere to be seen in the first quarter. This is because Thomas, the No. 4 overall pick in this year’s draft, was benched by Giants’ head coach Joe Judge for being late to a team meeting.

Thomas, who started the first five games of the season, sat out the entire first quarter, being replaced by fellow rookie Matt Peart. He played in the second, but had to give up his place to Peart once again in the third period.

“I thought Andrew did a really good job of accepting it, staying ready, performing when he got in the game,” said Judge, downplaying the severity of Thomas’ actions. “Matt, we always preach be ready to play, his number was called, and he was ready to go early and right away.”

Issuing a statement about the incident, Thomas said that he takes “responsibility for my actions and the consequences,” while promising something like this “won’t happen again.”

Giants drafted Andrew Thomas with hopes that he can guard quarterback Daniel Jones’ blind side for years to come. Thomas previously spent three years playing college football at Georgia.

The New York Giants season isn’t off to a great start. Not only have they started their season with two losses, but they’ve also lost their star running back to a season-ending injury during the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears.

The Giants ended up losing the game 17-13 and Saquon Barkley had to be carried off the field after he fell to the ground in pain. It was later reported that the player tore his ACL and that he’ll be out for the rest of the season.

This injury is huge for the Giants as General manager Dave Gettleman drafted Barkley with the No. 2 pick in the 2018 draft and Barkley was supposed to be the safety net for second-year quarterback Daniel Jones.

When Barkley was drafted, Gettleman was criticized for taking a running back with such a high pick, especially when considering the other needs of the Giants at the time and how injury-prone the position is.

Since being hired in December 2017, Gettleman has struggled to put together a winning team and the Giant shave won only nine games and lost 25 games.

New offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, who was head coach for the Dallas Cowboys and helped turn them into a rushing team, had big plans for Barkley.

Now, the Giants have only two running back options—Wayne Gallman, who has only 80 carries over the last two seasons, and 29-year-old journeyman Dion Lewis.
