The New York Mets made a free agency signing, but it isn’t a big name like many of their fans expected. Instead, the team boosted the reliever position by getting veteran right-hand pitcher Trevor May.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, May inked a two-year contract with the Mets. The deal, believed to be worth around $15 million, will become official once the 31-year-old player completes his physical.

May arrives in New York after spending the last six seasons with the Minnesota Twins. He was 1-0 in 2020, posting a 3.86 ERA with 38 strikeouts and two saves.

The addition of May gives the Mets a comfortable depth in the bullpen that already features the likes of closer Edwin Diaz and right-handers Jacob Barnes, Dellin Betances, Brad Brach, Seth Lugo, and Jeurys Familia. The group could also be joined by Miguel Castro, Chasen Shreve, and Robert Gsellman, depending on whether Mets decide to tender their contracts.

Trevor May made his MLB with the Twins in 2014 and was a starter early one before switching to bullpen ahead of the 2016 season. He has a 23–21 career record in the majors with 4.44 ERA and 367 strikeouts.
