We’re almost at the end of Pride Month and to celebrate Miley Cyrus has a huge concert on Peacock. Titled Stand by You, the special premiered on June 25, and it included tons of amazing performances including the singer’s greatest hits as well as some of the biggest songs of the decade. Cyrus was joined by award-winning artists, special guests, and LGBTQ+ allies. To say the night was one huge party would be an understatement. Here are three of the most iconic moments from the Pride special.

Call For Action

There were many amazing country artists who took to the Nashville stage with Cyrus, but two of the most memorable performances were Marren Morris and Mickey Guyton. Morris and Cyrus sang ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” and Guyton joined Cyrus for Blondie’s “Heart of Glass”.

The night was full of colorful performances like “Stand By You”, “Believe”, “Music,” “Express Yourself,” and “Like a Prayer”, but it was what Cyrus did between songs that caught our attention. She brought attention to the trials the LGBTQ community continues to face, comparing their struggles to what we’ve had to face during the pandemic. “Isolation, being distanced or removed from our families, or feeling a loss of freedom in lockdown,” Cyrus said, “hate and injustice and inequality is a global pandemic all on its own. This community and the rights of individuals apart of it are at risk.”

Brothers Osborne’s “We Belong”

Brothers Osborne, featuring brothers John and TJ Osborne, performed Pat Benatar’s “We Belong” with Cyrus and it was super meaningful because TJ is the first openly gay man with a major label country recording contract. He came out earlier this year.

The difficult reality is that, as far as we’ve come in regard to LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance, there is still a long way to go. Many individuals and groups are still anti-LGBT, which is something that is especially challenging for people who identify both as religious and LGBT.

And, unfortunately, like with most taboos, this is something that is rarely talked about, making it all the more difficult for queer religious people, who might feel even more isolated due to the lack of conversation and representation of their experience.

That’s why so many people took notice of a certain Instagram post published this week. David Archuleta, an American singer-songwriter known primarily for taking the runner-up position in season seven of American Idol, opened up on his Instagram about his religion and sexuality, penning a deeply personal post.

In the caption, he wrote,” Idk what to make of it and I don’t have all the answers. I just invite you to please consider making room to be more understanding and compassionate to those who are LGBTQIA+, and those who are a part of that community and trying to find that balance with their faith which also is a huge part of their identity like myself.”
