Have you heard of the “shullet”? It’s a take on the mullet and it combines two of the most popular hair trends of the year—the mullet and shag. In case you missed it, the mullet was all over the red carpet at the VMAs with Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish, and Bretman Rock among the many celebrities rocking the controversial cut. And the shullet is the less dramatic take on the shag and mullet.

The shullet is long and almost overgrown in the back and a lot shorter in the front. The length of the top is longer than a classic mullet and unlike the shag, which has bands and layers on top that are mid-length, the shullet’s layers on top are very short and don’t blend into the back.

The trendy new cut is the perfect way to try out the mullet and shag, but without fully committing to either one. You can say it’s a hybrid cut. It still packs a statement as it’s much more dramatic than the normal fall haircuts, but it’s more low-key than the mullet and shag.

Are you ready to go bold this fall? The shullet is the way to go!

We’re calling it: shags and mullets are the official haircuts of the Coronavirus pandemic era. Whether it’s because they’re seemingly easy to do at home or just because they’re the kind of random thing TikTok has made viral, people are giving themselves shag haircuts left, right, and center, with plenty of videos to prove it.

But just because you can pick up a pair of scissors and start hacking at your hair doesn’t mean that you’re qualified to give yourself a shag haircut. That’s why Brad Mondo—the internet’s favorite hair stylist—has released a new video teaching you how to give yourself a shag haircut without ruining your hair.

Key tips and tricks include putting your hair into a brushed-out high ponytail, cutting layers while your hair is in the ponytail, putting your hair back down, sectioning it, overdirecting it forward, and cutting more layers around the face, almost like a curtain bang. Though, beware, even Brad Mondo himself will warn you that this isn’t exactly a beginner’s haircut, so try it at your own risk.

So watch the video to get more details about how to achieve this DIY shag – and may the hair gods be with you.

Miley Cyrus and Billie Eilish have inspired a new hair trend—the shag. The choppy ends, tons of layers, and bold texture are so ’70s, but celebrities have managed to make it look trendy in 2021. And to get the look, TikTok users have been chopping off their ponytails. We’re not seeing tons of shags and mullets all over the platform.

So, how are people creating the perfect shag? They’re slicking their hair back into a high ponytail and cutting off a few inches from the ends straight across. Then they’re taking scissors and cutting vertically into the ends of the hair for more texture and to keep the ends from being blunt. This helps create a straight line.

One of the first TikTokers to start cutting her hair into a shag was Florasandfaunas and the results were better than we would’ve expected. She already had some layers in her hair, so the final result was just a bit shorter. Before long, others started creating their own versions of the look.

The haircut is shorter in the front and longer in the back, giving it total mullet vibes. While it’s worked for some TikTokers, for others it’s ended with choppy, uneven hair and they had to get it fixed by a professional. If you’re looking to get a shag, we suggest going to the salon.
