Black is King isn’t Beyoncé’s first visual album, and she’s pretty familiar with this concept. Her eponymous fifth studio album from 2013 was also accompanied by a series of short films, but its follow-up Lemonade remains the most iconic visual album of the 21st century so far.
Solange — When I Get Home
Beyoncé isn’t even the only person in her family with an amazing visual album under her belt. Solange’s latest LP When I Get Home was accompanied by a short film of the same name, which connected all of the songs in one continuous narrative.
Janelle Monáe — Dirty Computer
Janelle Monáe’s career-defining record Dirty Computer was followed by a 46-minute narrative film of the same name. This project was a true visual feast and did an amazing job tying all the songs together into one cohesive unit.
