Many other acclaimed movies made the cut, while other worthy films and performances were ignored, and here are five snubs and surprises that we didn’t see coming.
The race for the best actress has been pretty competitive this year, but it was still a shocker to see Angelina Jolie miss out on a nomination for Maria. Pamela Anderson (The Last Showgirl), Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), and Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Hard Truths) also failed to make the cut.
Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong have both given stellar performances in The Apprentice, and it was a pleasant surprise to see the Academy recognize their outstanding work.
Even though Emilia Pérez received 13 Oscar nods, a supporting actress nomination for Selena Gomez wasn’t one of them. Margaret Qualley (The Substance) and Jamie Lee Curtis (The Last Showgirl)) have also been shut out of this category.
After ignoring the horror genre time and time again, the Academy has finally given some love to The Substance and awarded it with five nominations, including best picture, director, and actress for Demi Moore.
Challengers has always been a long shot in the main categories, but it was a shocker to see it miss out on nominations for best score and editing.

Sean Baker collected the coveted Palme d’Or for Anora, which chronicles the tale of an exotic dancer from New York, whose life takes a wild turn when she elopes with the son of a Russian oligarch.
Yorgos Lanthimos’s star-studded anthology film Kinds of Kindness has been described as “a triptych fable” about three individuals on their path to take charge of their own destiny.
Led by Sebastian Stand and Jeremy Strong, this acclaimed biopic sees the young Donald Trump relying on power, corruption, and deception to start his real estate empire with the help of infamous lawyer Roy Cohn.
Demi Moore received some of the best reviews of her career for her role in The Substance, the tale of a fading celebrity who decides to take a shady cell-replicating substance to create a younger, better version of herself.
Adriana Paz, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, and Zoe Saldaña received the best actress role for their work in Emilia Pérez, which sees a former cartel boss embark on a unique journey of self-discovery.
