The new owner of the XFL league, actor and former professional wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson announced that the football league is looking to make a triumphant return in the spring of 2022.

Johnson and his partner Dany Garcia bought the the failed football league for $15 million.

The XFL filed for bankruptcy after the COVID-19 pandemic hit, forcing the league to shut down its season after just a few weeks in April. Even though viewership started off strong with more than six million fans tuning in for week one, the numbers steadily went down every week.

The league was founded by WWE CEO Vince McMahon back in 2001, so it makes sense that a former professional wrestler like Johnson would be someone who would want to take another stab at trying to resurrect the league.

The XFL only played one full season back in 2001, which ended with a loss of $70 million before McMahon tried to bring it back again this year.

It will be interesting to see what Johnson and Garcia plan to do in order to turn the XFL around and find a way to keep fans engaged and coming back to the league week after week.
