While the Olympics are mainly about sports, the opening ceremony had some standout fashion moments that we’ve been thinking about all weekend. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics started on Friday, July 23 with over 11,000 athletes from 206 countries, and between the performers and team uniforms, the opening ceremony was really impressive when it came to fashion. Between high fashion and homage to various cultures, these were the five best fashion moments from the event.

Misia

Japanese singer Misia wore this rainbow-colored, oversized gown by Tokyo-based designer Tomo Koizumi to sing Japan’s national anthem. The dress looked like it came straight off the runway.

Team USA

Ralph Lauren returned as the official designer for Team USA’s Olympics uniforms and the athletes looked really patriotic in these retro-style outfits that included a navy blazer and trousers, a striped short-sleeved shirt, and a custom face mask.

Tonga’s Pita Taufatofua

People can’t stop talking about Tonga’s Pita Taufatofua who reprised his role as the country’s flag bearer. He appeared shirtless and covered in oil as he carried the flag.

Kenya’s Olympic Team

One of the most colorful uniforms for the opening ceremony went to Kenya. The team’s female athletes wore Maasai print dresses under a red-caped bolero jacket and the men wore matching shirts with black trousers.

Colombia’s Olympic Team

Colombia’s Olympic team combined their culture with Japan’s, wearing traditional kimonos embellished with yellow flowers and red, blue, and yellow strips representing the Columbian flag. They accessorized it with a patterned hat and face mask.

After a delay, the 2020 Olympics are going to be held this summer in Tokyo from July 23 through August 8. To say we’ve been waiting patiently for the Olympics would be an understatement and we’re super excited to cheer Team USA on! With the Olympic trials coming to an end, these are the athletes everyone’s talking about. Make sure you keep an eye out for these three Team USA Women Olympians.

Simone Biles

Simone Biles has won seven national championships, 19 world titles, and five Olympic gold medals, making her one of the greater gymnasts of all time. Since 2013, she hasn’t lost a single all-around national, world, or Olympic competition, so can she keep up the momentum in Tokyo?

Sydney McLaughlin

This track and field athlete became the youngest Olympian in her sport to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio at just 16. Now the 21-year-old McLaughlin will be competing in the Tokyo Olympics after winning the 400-meter hurdles finals and setting a new record in the process with a time of 51.90.

Lilly King

After winning the 100-meter breaststroke at the U.S. Swimming Trials, Lilly King is heading to the Olympics to try and get her second gold medal. Back in 2016, she won gold in the 100-meter breaststroke with an Olympic-record time of 1:04.93 minutes.
