Movies about the glamorous life of the upper class are nothing new in Hollywood, but some of our favorite directors took this genre and turned it out its head this fall. Movies about the fallout of the rich are showing up everywhere and here are three that you should put on your watch list.

Triangle of Sadness

Triangle of Sadness started this rising trend when it won Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. It follows the passengers of an ultra-luxe cruise for the super-rich, including a supermodel couple, who end up stranded on a deserted island after their trip goes awry.

The Menu

Culinary thrillers and movies about the downfall of the rich are everywhere right now and The Menu blends these two tropes into one cinematic tale. It centers on a group of wealthy people attending an exclusive dinner prepared by an eccentric celebrity chef, but it quickly turns out they bit more than they can chew.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

The first Knives Out film did a great job showing rich and privileged people fall from grace and the sequel Glass Onion is set to do the same. It shows detective Benoit Blanc traveling to a tech billionaire’s private Greek Island after one of his guests turns up dead.

The Cannes Film Festival returned to the French Riviera for its 75th anniversary this May and it was a true treat for cinephiles from all around the world. Some of the most-anticipated films of 2022 premiered at this prestigious festival, and here are five that got everyone talking by the time it was over.

Triangle of Sadness

Ruben Ostlund’s black comedy about a couple of fashion models joining a cruise for the super-rich won Palme d’Or in Cannes this year, so it goes without saying it’s one of the festival’s biggest hits.

Elvis

Elvis wasn’t one of the movies in the competition this year, but that didn’t stop this highly-anticipated biopic from receiving one of the festival’s longest-standing ovations following its premiere.

Broker

Hirokazu Kore-eda’s latest film centers around two men stealing babies from a church’s baby box and selling them on the adoption black market and it premiered to a 12-minute standing ovation at this year’s festival.

Decision to Leave

Park Chan-wook received the award for the best director for his work on this crime drama, which centers on a detective struggling to solve a murder after falling for the victim’s mysterious widow.

Crimes of the Future

David Cronenberg’s latest body-horror inspired both standing ovations and walkouts in Cannes, and it’s certainly one of the festival’s most polarizing projects this year.
