Although the VMAs looked different than they did in past years, the red carpet looks didn’t disappoint. For a second, we actually forgot we were in the midst of a pandemic (besides for seeing Lady Gaga’s amazing face masks). Celebrities were inspired by the ’90s, and the beauty looks in particular. These were the best ’90s-inspired beauty looks from the night.

Keke Palmer

The host of the night had many amazing outfit changes throughout the ceremony, but her opening look was totally ’90s with her hair slicked back in a french-roll updo with face-framing tendrils. To complete the look, she paired it with a choker—does it get more ’90s than that?

Ariana Grande

Grande took the stage with Lady Gaga for an epic “Rain on Me” performance in Baby Spice inspired high pigtail ponytails wearing bold graphic eyeliner and shimmery eye shadow.

Bella Hadid

The model presented in a edgy beauty look featuring a messy bun with face-framing bands, thick black eyeliner, and glowy makeup.

Bebe Rexha

Between the ’90s ponytail and blunt side bangs, the singer’s hair is totally ’90s, which looked flawless paired with her edgy outfit and metallic french-tip manicure.

As in typical Lady Gaga fashion, the singer came to the awards ceremony serving up look after look and the pandemic didn’t stop her from having the most memorable outfits of the night. Not only did Gaga win Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Cinematography, Best Collaboration, and the first-ever Tricon Award, she rocked nine different outfits during the VMAs, swapping out different looks for each win and performance. The masks that she wore with each of her looks are what caught our attention and Gaga made staying safe look so chic. In total, she wore seven amazing, masks. Check the looks out below.

Red Carpet

Her red carpet look was out of this world—Gaga started the night in an astronaut-inspired helmet designed by Conrad by Conrad and a metallic dress with a zip of collar and puffy train designed by AREA. She even posted the look on Instagram captioning it, “I was wearing face shields before it was a thing 👆🤣 #VMAs.”

Best Collaboration Award

To accept the Best Collaboration Award, the Rain on Me singer wore a futuristic, rainbow feathered dress by Iris van Herpen and a pink heart-shaped mask by Cecilio Castrillo.

Performances

Gaga’s first performance was to “911” and she wore a turquoise bikini set and swapped it out for a fuchsia set for her performance of “Rain on Me” with Ariana Grande. She switched up her outfit once again for “Stupid Love” to a sparkling pink bodysuit. One thing all three looks had in common was a digitized mask that synced with Gaga’s singing.

Song of the Year Award

Gaga accepted the award for Song of the Year for “Rain on Me” in this stunning green taffeta ball gown by Christopher John Rogers, but it was the horned mask by Lance Victor Moore that stole the show.

Artist of the Year

It’s safe to say we saw a lot of the singer during the awards show and for her next honor, Artist of the Year, Gaga wore a sparkling silver bodysuit with platform boots and a white feathered coat designed by Maison Valentino. The matching silver mask was designed by Maison Met aka Mety Choa and it added a touch of glamor to the over-the-top look.

Tricon Award

To accept the first ever Tricon Award, Gaga looked like she came straight from a Disney movie in this jacket by Candice Cuoco, pointed bra and chocker by Manuel Albarran, and Maison Valentino ensemble. The mask was gunmetal with crystals and it had antlers poking out from it.

After Show

Following her show-stopping looks of the night, Gaga ended the show in a retro MTV t-shirt and studded Chromatica mask with her awards.
