Trend Alert! Ruffle Masks

This past year has seen a steady rise is all things ruffle. A ruffled shirt? Yes please. A poofy ruffled dress? We’ll take one as well. So when Tia Adeol of Slashed by Tia introduced the ruffle mask you couldn’t say we were all that surprised. The reusable, washable and adjustable ruffle masks come with velcro fastenings and are available in a range of colors, including bubble gum pink and bright orange. According to Adeol, 75% of the profits made will be donated towards the battle against Covid-19. A worthy cause if any.

In an interview with Fader, Adeol explains how during her fashion studies, she was introduced to 16th-century Spanish painters and was instantly inspired. “There were so many ruffled garments that princesses and queens would wear that were so large and voluminous and difficult to make,” she relayed. “I wanted to capture that and translate it for the modern-day.”

But Adeol’s passion for fashion began much earlier than that, having learned to sew when she was about 8 years old. Born in Nigeria, raised in London, and currently based in New York, Adeol draws from her multicultural background. “In Nigeria, my mom would collect these beautiful fabrics, she just had huge stacks of them,” she recalled. “I would take needles and thread and pieces of the fabric from her collection to make these extravagant dresses for my barbies. Then I took a lot of textile classes during my time in high school.”

Jump forward some years later, and she now runs her own successful brand, amassing an impressive following on Instagram and chosen by Teen Vogue as one of their 21 Under 21 class of 2018. Prepare to add some ruffles to your feed:
