Since its premiere earlier this spring, Cruel Summer built a passionate following and become Freeform’s most-watched series. Its renewal was a no-brainer for the network, but what will this teen mystery drama have in store once it returns for Season 2?

The Story Continues?

The first season of Cruel Summer centered on Kate Wallis, a popular teenage girl who disappears without a trace, and Jeanette Turner, her shy and nerdy classmate who seemingly tries to take her place after her disappearance and is later accused of covering up her kidnapping.

The first season of Cruel Summer offered a lot of twists and turns, and it can stand on its own after Season 1 finale. There’s still room to revisit Kate, Jeanette, and the rest of the characters from the first chapter of this story, but there’s still no guarantee that will happen in Season 2.

Anthology Series?

There’s a chance the upcoming season of Cruel Summer won’t continue the story from the first one but focus on a new mystery. It could return in anthology form, and use multiple timelines to tell another story from different points of view. Both ideas are compelling, but even the showrunner Tia Napolitano isn’t 100% sure what the future holds at this point.

“We know we’re going to deliver a super-twisty mystery, we know we’re going to live with some interesting characters and their psychology and talk about some important stuff… Other than that, it’s completely open-ended at this point,” Napolitano told Entertainment Weekly.
