From Tick, Tick… Boom! to In the Heights, several beloved musicals have been adapted into films in recent years—and these adaptations are just getting bigger and bigger! Several iconic Broadway musicals will soon get a Hollywood treatment and here are three that we’re most excited about.

The Color Purple

The Color Purple draws inspiration from Alice Walker’s iconic book of the same name, but it’s not your classic adaptation. It’s actually based on the stage musical that put an interesting twist on its original story about the life-long struggles of an African-American woman living in the South during the early 20th century.

Mean Girls: The Musical

Mean Girls is one of the most iconic teen comedies of the 2000s, and it was just a matter of time before we got a Gen-Z version with a new cast. This film won’t be a direct remake because it’s mostly based on the stage musical of the same name, but the expectations are running high since Tina Fey returned to write the script.

Wicked

The Wicked adaptation was a long time coming since it’s one of the most impactful Broadway musicals of the 21st century. Jon M. Chu decided to adapt it into two films, led by Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, set to come out in 2024 and 2025.
