After months of anticipation, the Academy Awards nominations are finally in, with Emilia Pérez leading the way with a total of 13 nods. Many other acclaimed movies made the cut, while other worthy films and performances were ignored, and here are five snubs and surprises that we didn’t see coming.

Snub: Angelina Jolie, Maria

The race for the best actress has been pretty competitive this year, but it was still a shocker to see Angelina Jolie miss out on a nomination for Maria. Pamela Anderson (The Last Showgirl), Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), and Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Hard Truths) also failed to make the cut.

Surprise: The Apprentice

Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong have both given stellar performances in The Apprentice, and it was a pleasant surprise to see the Academy recognize their outstanding work.

Snub: Selena Gomez, Emilia Pérez

Even though Emilia Pérez received 13 Oscar nods, a supporting actress nomination for Selena Gomez wasn’t one of them. Margaret Qualley (The Substance) and Jamie Lee Curtis (The Last Showgirl)) have also been shut out of this category.

Surprise: The Substance

After ignoring the horror genre time and time again, the Academy has finally given some love to The Substance and awarded it with five nominations, including best picture, director, and actress for Demi Moore.

Snub: Challengers

Challengers has always been a long shot in the main categories, but it was a shocker to see it miss out on nominations for best score and editing.

The holiday season is the perfect time to hit the theaters with your family, and leading movie studios decided to use its festive spirit to their advantage. Animated movies will be making waves at the box office in the upcoming weeks, and here are four worth seeing on the big screen.

Moana 2 (November 27)

Moana 2 shattered countless box office records after hitting the theaters just in time for Thanksgiving, and we wouldn’t be surprised if it hit the $1 billion mark by the end of the year. Moana’s new adventure is as epic as her last, and it sees her exploring the far seas of Oceania after her wayfinding ancestors come calling.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (December 13)

Fans of The Lord of the Rings will get the chance to celebrate the holidays in style – by watching The War of the Rohirrim on the big screen. This anime fantasy film sees the legendary king of Rohan trying to defend his kingdom against an army of Dunlendings by any means necessary.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (December 20)

The third film in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise will see Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles facing a powerful new enemy. Given how amazing the previous two films did, we’re expecting the third to be quite a knockout.

Mufasa: The Lion King (December 20)

Made in the same photo-realistically animated style as The Lion King remake from 2019, this spin-off will tell the legendary story from Mufasa’s point of view and chronicle his early years.

The 2000s have given us many amazing “girl power” comedies that still resonate to this day, and many of them will soon return for another ride. Sequels and spin-offs themed around the classic Y2K movies are taking Hollywood by storm, and here are three worth waiting for.

The Princess Diaries

Two decades after we said goodbye to Mia Thermopolis, she’s ready to make her grand return. Anne Hathaway confirmed she’s going back to Genovia in The Princess Diaries 3, which hails from screenwriter Flora Greeson and director Adele Lim, whose credits include Crazy Rich Asians and Joy Ride.

The Devil Wears Prada

The Devil Wears Prada sequel is also on the way, with Anne Hathaway returning alongside Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt. The new film will reportedly see Miranda Priestly navigating her career amid the decline of traditional magazine publishing and trying to secure advertising dollars from a luxury group where Blunt’s Emily Charlton now works as a high-powered executive.

Legally Blonde

After years of speculations about a potential third Legally Blonde movie, this sequel is yet to get a green light, but Elle Woods will return regardless. Amazon Prime Video ordered a prequel series Elle, which will see the titular heroine trying to navigate her teenage years, and they recently opened a casting call for the lead actress.

We can count on Marvel to save their biggest news for the San Diego Comic-Con, and they truly pulled all the stops this year. The future of the MCU is looking bright, and we’re bringing you three buzzy moments from the Comic-Con that got everyone talking.

Robert Downey Jr. Returns

It’s been a few years since Robert Downey Jr. exited the MCU as Iron Man, but his return is on the horizon. He’ll be back as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, set to be released in May 2026 and 2027. The directing duo the Russo brothers are also making their MCU comeback by his side.

“Fantastic Four” First Footage

The Fantastic Four is one of Marvel’s most exciting new projects, and we now know it will officially be titled Fantastic Four: First Steps. Its star-studded cast united at Comic-Con to share the first footage with the world.

Harrison Ford as Red Hulk

Marvel is betting big on Captain America: Brave New World and Comic-Con has given us many hints about this project. Harrison Ford’s character Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross has been revealed as Red Hulk. We’ve also learned that Giancarlo Esposito will play Sidewinder, the leader of the Serpent Society and that Adamantium will be introduced in this film.

Inside Out 2 reunited us with Riley and the complex emotions inside her head, and moviegoers flocked to theatres to see it on the big screen. After just three weeks, Pixar’s hit animated sequel broke several major records and it’s shaping up to be one of the most successful films of the years.

Biggest Pixar Opening

Inside Out 2 knocked it out of the park during its debut week and exceeded everyone’s expectations. With $154.2 million grossed domestically and an estimated $140 million in international markets, it scored the highest worldwide debut in Pixar’s history with a total of $294.2 million.

2024 Records

Inside Out 2 is the most commercially successful film of 2024, and it set several major records in less than a month. Before becoming the highest-grossing film of the year, it also scored the largest opening weekend of the year domestically, becoming the first film of 2024 to open above $100 million.

$1 Billion Dollar Club

It took just three weeks for Inside Out 2 to join the $1 billion dollar box office club, and this number is quite a marvel. It’s the first 2024 film to soar this high, in addition to being the fastest animated movie in history to cross the $1 billion dollar mark.
