Cowboy Caviar is TikTok’s Latest Food Craze You Should Try This Summer

TikTok has given us more amazing food trends than we can count and it’s the first place you should head to when looking for amazing new recipes to try this summer. Cowboy caviar is all the rage on this social media platform right now, but what is this food craze all about?

There’s no point crediting this viral dish to any TikTok user in particular because it predates most of them. Texas caviar or cowboy caviar has been around for decades, and it’s believed that Helen Corbitt came up with a dish in 1940, while working as a head chef at Neiman Marcus.

80 years later, this dish is experiencing a reemergence on TikTok, and it deserves all the attention it’s getting. TikToker Bria Lemirande received over 12 million views since sharing her version of the dish and many other people tried to recreate the recipe including celebrities such as Shay Mitchell.

At its core, cowboy caviar is just a salad made with black-eyed peas and vinaigrette-style dressing, often served as a dip with tortilla chips. Many of the viral recipes on TikTok also include tomatoes, bell peppers, corn, and onion, but you can only use them as an inspiration and find your own perfect combo of ingredients.

@shaymitchell Can someone actually tell me why it’s called cowboy caviar #cowboycaviar ♬ original sound – Shay Mitchell
