Movies based on popular TV shows sometimes struggle to find an audience and critical acclaim, but not Downton Abbey. The success of the first movie was impossible to deny and its sequel eventually got a green light, but what can we expect from it once it finally hits the theaters?

Cast Members

The entire main cast of the first Downton Abbey movie, led by Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Imelda Staunton, and Maggie Smith, is expected to return for the sequel. They’ll be in a pretty good company of several new cast members—Hugh Dancy (Hannibal), Dominic West (The Affair), Laura Haddock (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Nathalie Baye (Laurence Anyways).

Plotline

The plotline of the next movie is still being kept under wraps, but producers Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame said they have some ideas for the sequel before it was even confirmed. According to Fellowes, the second movie will most likely resemble the first and he’s not planning to “set off in a different direction”.

Filming and Release

Downton Abbey 2 began production last week, and we won’t have to wait for it too long. Its release date has been set for December 22nd, 2021 and it’s the best Christmas present that fans of the franchise could possibly ask for.
