Jodie Whittaker is stepping down from her role as Doctor Who later this year and we finally know who her successor will be. Ncuti Gatwa has been cast as the next Time Lord and here’s everything you should know about this Rwandan-Scottish actor before he steps into the TARDIS.

Historic Casting

Gatwa’s casting marks a huge milestone for Doctor Who because he’ll be the first black actor to ever play this role. He said he feels “a mix of deeply honored, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared” after being cast as the next Time Lord because the show means so much to so many people around the world including himself.

Gatwa’s Track Record

Like most of the previous Doctor Who stars, Gatwa already became a household name before stepping into this role. He’s best known for playing Eric Effiong in the Netflix teen series Sex Education and we’ll soon get to see him alongside Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in Barbie.

Russell T Davies Return

Gatwa’s casting won’t be the only major shift you’ll notice when Doctor Who comes back for Season 14. Russell T Davies, who served as showrunner during Christopher Eccleston’s and David Tennant’s tenure, is coming back and many fans of the show are hoping he’ll return Doctor Who to its former glory.
