Phoenix Suns are reportedly looking to make a big splash ahead of the new NBA season. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Suns have engaged in trade talks with Oklahoma City Thunder with the intention to acquire All-Star guard Chris Paul.

Windhorst reports that the talks have been ongoing for some time now, although there is no clear pathway to making the deal as of now. He adds that Thunder will also have Paul give his input on any potential trade he’s involved in.

Suns have a promising young roster, headlined by All-Star Devin Booker and 2018’s No. 1 pick DeAndre Ayron, but have failed to make any noise in the Western Conference so far. Still, the encouraging performance in the NBA bubble in Orlando, which saw Phoenix go 8-0, has the organization believe their window as a contender is getting open.

It is no secret that Thunder is looking to trade Paul, considering that the veteran doesn’t exactly fit in their rebuilding plans. The 35-year-old player proved to be a good mentor for OKC’s young squad, but the massive two years and $85.5 million left on his current deal make him an unnecessary luxury.

Paul is coming off a productive 2019/20 season in which he averaged 17.6 points and 6.7 assists per game while helping Thunder to an unexpected playoff appearance. He was named in the All-Star team for the first time since 2016 while also getting an All-NBA Second-Team nod.
