]]>We’re starting to notice a new trend on the red carpet at award shows—social media influencers are taking over! That’s right—and it couldn’t have been more evident at the Met Gala. Red carpet staples at the event like Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Zendaya, Jared Leto and Harry Styles skipped the event and social media influencers like Addison Rae, Dixie D’Amelio, Emma Chamberlain, Nikkie de Jager, Madison Beer, and Eugene Lee Yang among many others, made the guest-list. Of course, this sparked a lot of criticism. This begs the question—are influencers the future of the red carpet?
It kind of makes sense that influencers were all over the Met Gala and all of the co-hosts at this year’s event are Gen Z, which was the first time in the gala’s history. Hosts included Billie Eilish, Timothée Chalamet, Naomi Osaka, and Amanda Gorman.
It’s worth mentioning that influencers have managed to make a name for themselves beyond just social media. Rae starred in Netflix’s reboot of He’s All That and Chamberlain earned a business partnership with Louis Vuitton.
But we must admit, having influencers attend award shows and red carpet events makes them seem a little less exclusive and glamorous. Sure it draws a younger crowd, but shouldn’t celebrities have some acknowledgment for their hard work in the business.
We’ll wait and see how other award shows turn out this year before we decide if social media influencers are the future of the red carpet. What do you think of the new trend?

]]>The majority of award shows and film festivals have separate awards for “best actor” and “best actress”, but that’s slowly changing. Gender-neutral acting categories are becoming the new normal, and these three organizations recently gave them their seal of approval.
Berlin International Film Festival
This year’s Berlinale was held virtually, but that didn’t stop it from introducing some big changes. The acting awards for best leading and best-supporting performance were introduced, in an attempt to promote “more gender-sensitive awareness in the film industry”.
San Sebastian Film Festival
About a year since Berlinale announced their gender-neutral acting categories, Spain’s San Sebastian Film Festival followed suit. According to festival director José Luis Rebordinos, this change “arises from the conviction that gender, a social and political construct, is no longer a criterion that we follow to distinguish between performances”.
Emmy Awards
Unlike the previous two festivals, the Emmy Awards won’t be margining their “best actor” and “best actress” awards into one, but they’re taking a step towards a more gender-neutral approach. Nominees and winners in these categories can opt that their nomination certificate or Emmy statuette carry the term “performer” in place of actor or actress, according to the Television Academy’s recent statement.
