Ariana Grande’s highly-anticipated album Eternal Sunshine finally hit the shelves this month, and it cemented her status as one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Billboard 200 and Hot 100 numbers for its first week are in, and Grande set several major chart milestones.

Largest Week of 2024

With 227,000 album-equivalent units earned during its debut week, Eternal Sunshine scored the largest week for an album in 2024, surpassing Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign’s Vultures 1.

Largest Vinyl Week

Eternal Sunshine earned 33,000 album-equivalent units from vinyl sales alone after Grande decided to release six different vinyl editions, scoring the largest vinyl sales week of her career.

Simultaneous No. 1

In addition to topping the Billboard 200 chart with Eternal Sunshine, Grande also hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart with her latest single “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)”. This marks the first time she simultaneously debuted at the top of both charts.

Most No. 1 Debuts Among Women

“We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” is Grande’s seventh single to debut atop the Hot 100 chart, helping her break Taylor Swift’s record for most No. 1 debuts among women.

Top 10 Streak

Eternal Sunshine also continued Grande’s unprecedented top 10 streak on the Hot 100 chart. Its lead single “Yes, And?” debuted at No. 1, making Grande the only artist to debut the first single from each of her albums in the top 10.

Brenda Lee was only 13 when she recorded the holiday classic “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” in 1958 and its legacy still lives on. This song topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart 65 years after its release, but how exactly did it secure the No. 1 spot after all this time?

Social Media Push

Brenda Lee said that her team and her fans deserve the credit for the recent success of “Christmas Tree”—and she’s up to something. This song experienced a new surge in popularity after the veteran singer joined TikTok and celebrated the song’s 65th anniversary by filming a brand-new music video.

Slow Rise

The success of “Christmas Tree” didn’t come out of nowhere, and this song has been steadily climbing up the Hot 100 chart for years. It took the No. 2 spot behind “All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey for four consecutive years before finally hitting No. 1.

Holiday Takeover

“Christmas Tree” is a part of the holiday takeover on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week. Several holiday classics made it to the top five including Carey’s behind “All I Want for Christmas Is You”, Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock”, and Wham!’s “Last Christmas”.

Setting Records

At 78, Lee is the oldest artist to ever climb to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and she set several more records along the way. Lee also had the longest run to No. 1 (65 years), the longest span, and the longest break between No. 1 singles (63 years).

The Billboard Hot 100 tends to experience a major overhaul every holiday season, and things have gotten a little bit spooky this week. From Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” to Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters”, several songs with a spooky vibe returned to the chart after Halloween.

Michael Jackson’s smash hit “Thriller” experienced the biggest gain on the Hot 100 chart this week, jumping to no. 21 with 14.5 million streams, 10.9 million radio airplay audience impressions, and 5,000 downloads during the week leading up to Halloween.

Bobby “Boris” Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers’ zombie-themed bop “Monster Mash” jumped to No. 38, after spending two weeks at No. 1 following its release in 1962. Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters” also re-entered the Hot 100 at No. 45, returning to the chart for the third consecutive year just in time for Halloween.

It was also a huge week for the soundtrack of Tim Burton’s animated classic The Nightmare Before Christmas, which jumped to No. 25 on the Billboard 200 with 25,000 equivalent album units earned during its latest week on the chart. Its biggest hit “This Is Halloween” made its debut at No. 41, marking the first time any song from this beloved movie entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

If you take a closer look at all the songs that topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart this fall, you’ll notice a familiar pattern. All the tracks that reached no. 1 in the past few weeks saw two or more artists joining forces, and that’s the case with these three chart-topping singles.

“Stay” – The Kid Laroi ft. Justin Bieber

If we had to pick a single song that’s been dominating Billboard Hot 100 in the past few months, it would definitely be this one. The Kid Laroi’s collaboration with his idol Justin Bieber managed to stay on top for seven weeks, becoming one of the longest-running no. 1 singles of the year.

“Industry Baby” – Lil Nas X ft. Jack Harlow

“Industry Baby” debuted at no. 2 when it originally came out back in July, and its climb to the top was a joy to watch. Its surge to no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 was pushed by the release of two new versions, one with an alternative digital single cover and an extended mix.

“Way 2 Sexy”  – Drake ft. Future and Young Thug

Drake broke the record for the highest number of top-10 singles from one album making it to the Billboard Hot 100, but only one could reach the top. “Way 2 Sexy” put his new LP Certified Lover Boy on the map, and it became his latest collaboration to hit no. 1.

BTS has such a passionate fan base that we can count on each new song they share with the world to shatter records and top the charts. That was centrally the case this year because the K-pop group gave us not one, not two, but three chart-topping singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

“Butter”

BTS kicked off their chart domination in May when they dropped their summer anthem “Butter”. It easily debuted at no. 1 and went on to spend 10 non-consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the longest-running no. 1 hit of 2021.

“Permission to Dance”

“Butter” wasn’t BTS’s only candidate for the song of the summer. In the middle of its chart domination, they dropped another catchy track—”Permission to Dance”. It also debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100, but only spent one week at no.1 before “Butter” continued its reign.

“My Universe” ft. Coldplay

Summer may be behind us, but BTS’s chart domination is far from over. They returned to no. 1 with the Coldplay collaboration “My Universe”, set to be featured on the British band’s upcoming album Music of the Spheres. This became the first song by two co-billed lead groups to ever top the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Summer usually gives us countless songs that make it atop the Billboard Hot 100. Our favorite artists surprised us with many catchy tracks this time around, but not many managed to reach no. 1. Only four songs topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart this summer, so what is the secret behind their success?

BTS – “Butter”

Summer kicked off with “Butter” at no. 1, and it’s not difficult to see why. BTS has the most passionate fan base on the pop scene, and their summer anthem is so catchy that you don’t have to be a K-pop fan to love it.

BTS – “Permission to Dance”

“Permission to Dance” spent only a week atop the Billboard Hot 100, as a result of fans’ streaming efforts. Following its no. 1 debut, BTS returned to no. 1 with “Butter”.

The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber – “Stay”

If we had to pick a defining summer hit of 2021, it would definitely be “Stay”. The collaboration between Justin Bieber and the rising star Kid Laroi spent five weeks on top and it’s highly likely it will stay there for a few more.

Drake ft. Future and Young Thug – “Way 2 Sexy”

Drake created quite a commotion with his latest album Certified Lover Boy, and seeing it produce a no. 1 hit wasn’t a shocker. “Way 2 Sexy” stayed at the top spot for its debut week alone, before being replaced by “Stay”.
