]]>Even if you haven’t heard the names Winston Udeagha or Winston Leather, you might have come across the company’s products. Last June, the Nigerian leather brand celebrated the biggest leather sales in its 30 years of business. The boat was thanks to a tweet from Fashion historian Shelby Christie, highlighting the fact that Winston Leather’s tannery supplies leather to luxury fashion houses like Louis Vuitton and Ralph Lauren.
In an interview with Insider Udeagha shared that handbags are not just a fashion statement to him—but a part of his heritage. The craft of leather making was passed down to him from his father, who learned it from his relatives. The family’s tannery is located in Kano, a city in the northern region of Nigeria, known as the capital of leather manufacturing.
When Ugheada founded Winston Leather in the early 1990s, the company was mainly supplying leather to luxury fashion brands which then sold their products at luxury price points. The designer has since started selling leather accessories like shoes, laptop sleeves, and most recently, handbags on the Winston Leather website. Most of Winston Leather’s handbags range from $55 to $200. Udeagha has stated his goal to make luxury fashion more inclusive, especially for people in his community who manufacture leather but don’t own it themselves.
In 2020, Winston Leather reached a large new audience following Christie’s tweet, and Udeagha said he hopes to contribute to a changing conversation around how luxury is defined. “My idea of luxury is to be able to express yourself through fashion or other products in a way that is unique to you,” Udeagha said.

]]>Some fashion brands are more than the sum of their parts. In order for a brand to grow strong, an image is to be aspired to, and one that can hopefully attract a community that can stand behind it. With some 1 million fans on Instagram alone, fashion brand Cult Gaia lives up to its name. “Every great brand is cult-like, uniting like-minded people in their aesthetic ideals,” remarked brand founder and designer Jasmin Larian in a piece published on Anupam Dabral’s website.
Dabral’s aesthetic ideals are indeed ones we can get on board with, her products both trendy and functional, with coveted accessories that have been snatched by celebrities and Instagram it-girls alike.
But if one is to treat Larian’s as, indeed, a cult—then its formation is equally intriguing. For Larian, the brand’s big break was marked by a single product: the Ark bag. Made of bamboo slats and shaped like a half moon, the bag took Instagram by storm and was soon seen swinging gracefully from the arms of A-listers like Chrissy Teigen, Jessica Alba, and Michelle Williams.
According to Larian, the idea behind the bag, which later translated to other iconic pieces, was to create an item that was Objet d’Art whilst still having utility. “In the market, it was always hard for me to find artful pieces that felt special and wearable, with an affordable price point,” said Larian. “I love the idea of keeping special pieces forever.”
Inspiration comes from nature, women, and their meeting point. “Women and nature are endlessly inspiring, so there is a lot in the name,” explained Larian. “The name Gaia comes from the goddess of Mother Earth and the daughter of chaos, the most creative force there is in my opinion,” she noted.
With an emphasis on organic design, the brand aims for the sort a perfect imperfection. “Pieces should be perfectly imperfect and need to be nuanced to be beautiful, like nature, no two things are ever the same,” reads their website. This summer, we know what we’ll be wearing…

These days, as we slowly test the waters, we look to spend our cash appropriately. We don’t know about you but we’re already working on refreshing our wardrobe and accessories.
Our first priority: a new, stylish handbag. Most recently, we’ve stumbled across Boejack Design‘s hand crafted bags and instantly fell in love. Run by Seattle-based Eda Atay Pastirmaci, the small brand offers a range of bags, made from chosen materials that include selected fabrics, leather (including vegan leather), and hardware.
Pastirmaci’s bags also make for great gifts. “My advice for gifting one of my handbags is to think of your recipient’s future plans,” shared the designer with the Etsy blog. “For example, if she’s going to travel soon, I’d recommend the convertible fanny pack; if she just started college or a new job, I’d recommend the oversized tote bag so she can carry all of her books and supplies. The oversized tote is also perfect for people on the go, because it can fit a laptop, coat—even shoes for the gym after work. For someone who’s looking for something super unique, I would probably give the geometric bag or the wooden frame clutch.”
She also recommends keeping in mind the color and fabric. “For friends who are going through difficult times, I recommend giving them bags in bright colors to make them feel happier.”
And while purchasing a handbag might seem like a splurge, shopping from small businesses means investing your money in small designers and creators. Not only will your purchases be more unique, they’ll also be more ethical. If this doesn’t convince you, the following handbags likely will!
