If you’ve been tuning into awards season this year, you’ve probably heard the film Nomadland mentioned quite a few times. The Chloe Zhao directed film starring Frances McDormand as a woman in her sixties who loses everything during the Great Rescission and goes on a journey through the American West, has been dominating award season and we don’t expect it to slow down anytime soon.

Golden Globes

The event that took place on February 28, saw the film going into the night with four nods and it won two including Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director.

Critics Choice Awards

The Critics Choice Awards took place on March 7 and Nomadland was nominated for six awards and won four including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

BAFTAs

At the BAFTAs, which took place this past weekend, Nomadland went into the night with seven nominations and won four awards including the most coveted of the night—Best Film. The other awards it won were for Lead Actress, and Cinematography, and Director. Director Zhao became the second woman in the show’s history to win the award for Best Director.

Oscars

The most-anticipated award show of the year is set to take place on April 25 and Nomadland has been nominated for six nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing. We’ll only have to wait a few weeks to see if Nomadland sweeps the award season.

The Academy Award nominations are yet to be announced, but it’s already easy to predict who the winners will be. The race is pretty clear in several major categories, and here’s who’s expected to walk away with shiny statuettes come Oscar night.

Best Picture – Nomadland

It’s still too early to call Nomadland a lock for best picture at the Oscars, but its chances are looking pretty good. It already won several major accolades in this same category, including the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Award.

Best Director – Chloé Zhao

Chloé Zhao is also expected to pick up an Oscar for directing Nomadland. If she manages to do so, she’ll make history as the only woman alongside Kathryn Bigelow to win this award.

Best Actor – Chadwick Boseman

Chadwick Boseman won countless posthumous awards for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and he’s expected to repeat that same success come Oscar night.

Best Supporting Actor – Daniel Kaluuya

Daniel Kaluuya is one of the latecomers to the Oscar race, but his supporting turn in Judas and the Black Messiah is winning awards left and right and his Oscar chances are looking great.

Best Animated Feature – Soul

Pixar’s Soul will most certainly walk away with the Oscar for the best-animated feature, but that won’t be the only award it gets. Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor, and Atticus Ross will most likely win a trophy for collaborating on the score for this movie.

It’s never too early to start predicting the next year’s Oscar winners, but the race usually heats up during the fall’s festival season. The first major contenders are emerging, and Nomadland established itself as the most serious candidate after two major festival wins.

This poignant drama about an elderly woman who becomes a van-dwelling modern-day nomad stars Frances McDormand, and it had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. It was instantly met with critical acclaim and went on to win the Golden Lion.

After winning in Venice, Nomadland also won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival, becoming the first film in history to pick up top awards at both festivals. Many movies that won big at TIFF, including Green Book and 12 Years a Slave went on to win the best picture at the Oscars, so could Nomadland be the next one in line?

The race is still too early to call, and many other top Oscar contenders still haven’t seen the light of day. Nomadland is a huge hit with art-house lovers, but we’re yet to see if the Oscar voters will respond to its slow pace.

David Fincher’s passion project Mank could stand a much better chance because Academy members have a habit of going for movies about filmmaking. An Oscar victory is also long-overdue for Fincher, but it’s too early to judge this movie since the critics are yet to see it.
