Last summer we fell in love with Connell and Marianne (Paul Mascal and Daisy Edgar Jones) in the heartbreakingly beautiful miniseries Normal People. After the show’s wild success and several Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, Sally Rooney’s debut novel Conversations with Friends will also get its own small-screen adaptation.

Many of the creative team members who worked on Normal People are involved in this project too, including director Lenny Abrahamson and writer Alice Birch. Conversations with Friends follow the story of Frances and Bobbi, two Dublin-based college students, as they become romantically intertwined with Nick and Melissa, an older, sophisticated married couple in their 30s. Rooney herself described the book as a “coming of age story”, but also noted the significance of its setting around the 2008 economic crash in Dublin, and indeed class dynamics are a major theme in the novel.

Frances will be played by newcomer Alison Cameron, and Sasha Lane (who you may recognize from American Honey) will play Bobbi. Joe Alwyn (The Favorite) stars as Nick and Jemima Kirke (Girls) plays Melissa. The show will comprise 12 half-hour episodes and is set to be released on Hulu in 2022.

The trailer of You season 3 was finally released, and we could get a glimpse of what awaits us when the show returns in October. Season 2 of Netflix’s beloved thriller followed Joe (Penn Badgley) to Los Angeles as he fled his past life and discovered a new object to his creepy affections – a pastry chef named Love (Victoria Pedretti) who isn’t so innocent herself.

While the details on the 3rd season are scant, we do know that the plot will focus on Joe and Love as they raise their newborn son and commit to a life of suburban familial bliss. But like many young parents, Joe and Love struggle at times to adjust to their new lifestyle, and Joe becomes worryingly interested in a pretty blonde woman in the neighborhood.

Set to a chilling remix of Britney Spears’s Baby One More Time, the trailer shows a pair of hands, presumably those of Love, making a cake. In the background, Joe’s narration ponders on how raising a boy like himself would be “not without challenges”.

Production on the new season of You began in November 2020, but it was delayed several times due to Covid-19 restrictions. Netflix revealed on its social channels that the new episodes will premiere on October 15.

Clickbait, Netflix’s newest show, has quickly become its most popular, and people just can’t stop talking about it. So what is it about Clickbait that’s doing such a good job of capturing the international audience’s attention and interest? Let’s talk about it.

The Twists

More than anything else, Clickbait viewers are talking about the series’ twists, with each episode pointing to a new culprit as the potential killer until the shocking ending where the truth is revealed.

The Pace

As Roxana Hadadi wrote in her review of Clickbait for RogerEbert.com, “Clickbait is a reminder of why Netflix series became such hits in the first place. A cast of recognizable, serviceable actors dive with melodrama and zeal into a narrative that… moves at a breakneck pace, ends on cliffhangers like clockwork, and incorporates just enough zigs and zags to keep viewers guessing… ‘Clickbait’ grabs you, whizzes you along, and leaves you feeling satisfied… It’s not sophisticated, but it is highly bingeable.”

Netflix has perfected the binge TV formula and Clickbait is a perfect example, with each episode ending on the exact kind of cliffhanger that makes you feel like you have to see the next until—boom!—you’ve watched the whole season.

You probably remember how exciting it was when streaming services became all the rage and a little something called “binge-watching” was invented. Suddenly, we could watch entire seasons and series of existing TV shows in days.

And then, once streaming services started releasing their own original series, it became possible to watch a whole season of a brand new show from beginning to end without having to wait a week between episodes. It was, to put it lightly, very cool, and totally changed the face of television consumption.

But now, a decade or so later, we’re starting to see pushback against this TV-watching practice. Slowly, streaming services are starting to release shows in ways that actively discourage and disable binge-watching. Shows like Wanda Vision and Ted Lasso, huge pop culture phenomenons, are being released one or a few episodes at a time, almost like the old days.

Why might companies be opting for this? Well, one optimistic view might suggest that they’re pushing back against the unhealthy practice of binge-watching that’s bad for our eyes, bodies, and arguably our souls. Although it may be more likely that they just know it can increase hype and maximize impact. It remains to be seen if this trend continues.

The pandemic has not been kind to the TV and film industry, as production has been delayed and a lot of shows have been forced to cancel after they were previously renewed. No TV show is safe, even if it’s been renewed for a new season. To deal with the production delays, networks have also been pushing back the launch dates to later this fall or even next year.

Back in August, Netflix pulled the plug on previously renewed shows The Society and I Am Not Okay With This. ABC followed in September scrapping the second season of Colbie Smulders’ Stumptown. A few weeks ago, Amazon canceled its Cortes y Moctezuma starring Javier Bardem as production was unable to resume due to COVID-19.

Other shows that have had renewal reversals include Comedy Central’s Drunk History and Tosh.0 and TruTV’s I’m Sorry.

The latest show to get its renewal reversed in Netflix’s Emmy-nominated female wrestling drama Glow led by Alison Brie, which was supposed to return for a fourth and final season. “We’ve made the difficult decision not to do a fourth season of GLOW due to COVID, which makes shooting this physically intimate show with its large ensemble cast especially challenging,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement.

This leaves us to wonder which of our favorite shows are next to get canceled?

It’s been over five months since Hollywood shut down production due to the COVID-19 pandemic and in the past, summer has been the time when reality TV shows start airing. Now that summer’s almost over, reality TV competitions are beginning to return, but with detailed health and safety protocols. Shows have switched filming locations, adjusted formats, changed contestants, or shortened seasons during the pandemic. These are just a few of the reality TV shows that have continued production or are set to air in the next month or so.

Big Brother

Big Brother usually airs in July, but this year the premiere was set back to August 5, and casting wasn’t revealed until the show’s premiere night. This season is All-Stars and the contestants were isolated and tested ahead of the season opener and the live shows have no studio audience.

America’s Got Talent

This summer competition show was in the middle of auditions before being shut down in March. The remaining auditions were held without an audience and production returned in June outdoors with socially distanced and abbreviated Judge Cuts rounds. The live shows are held at the Universal Studios lot, instead of Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.

Love Island

Scheduled to premiere in May, the new season aired August 24 with shooting in Las Vegas instead of in Fiji. Contestants were quarantined and tested before arriving at The Cromwell hotel.

Dancing with the Stars

After announcing that co-hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews wouldn’t be returning for the upcoming season and replacing them with Tyra Banks, the competition show has been set for a September 14 premiere date. The pro dancers have already been announced, but the celebrity cast will be announced at a later date. Details about the format haven’t been released yet and it’s unclear if the show will air live.

Shark Tank

Shark Tank is another reality TV show that will be moving to Las Vegas for Season 12. There hasn’t been a premiere date announced yet, but filming has started.

Amidst all the racial injustice happening across the country, people are trying their best to re-examine their way of life and what they can do to make the world a better, safer place for all. Like the rest of the world, the entertainment industry is trying to do their part in supporting the Black Lives Matter moment and it starts from the messages portrayed in the media regarding social equality and the role of law enforcement. It comes as no surprise that many people’s view of the way society is supposed to function and the way the world works comes from the portrayal of people of color and cops in television and movies, and a lot of times they are shown in heavily stereotyped, inaccurate ways that are just offensive.

One film that’s considered a classic and has won several Oscars including best picture, glorifies slavery and negative stereotypes of Black people, Gone With The Wind, has been removed from HBO this past week following protests over the death of George Floyd. The film was released in 1939 and tells the love story of southern aristocrats Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leight) and Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) and it takes place in the American South on a plantation in the aftermath of the Civil War.

Gone With The Wind is a product of its time and depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society. These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of those depictions would be irresponsible,” an HBO Max spokesperson told Variety. The film is set to eventually return to the platform but with a discussion about its historical context and a denouncement of the racist portrayals.

But, it’s not just Old Hollywood films that have been affected by what’s going on around the country, Paramount Network has canceled the long-running television show Cops and Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and BritBox have removed Little Britain from their platforms. Cops debuted in 1989 on Fox and moved to Paramount Network (formally known as Spike TV) in 2013. Over the past few years, the show has been under fire for its depiction of law enforcement and what goes on behind the scenes. “‘Cops’ is not on the Paramount Network and we don’t have any current or future plans for it to return,” a Paramount Network spokesperson said in a statement.

The comedy series Little Britain and the comedians’ airports mockumentary Come Fly With Me were removed from networks after characters used blackface to portray different ethnic backgrounds. Star Matt Lucas regrets playing Black characters on the show, “I wouldn’t make that show now. It would upset people. We made a more cruel kind of comedy than I’d do now,” he told Big Issue in 2017.

If you are a 90s kid, you probably spent your days in front of the TV as a teenager, watching the very popular Project Runway.

Heidi Klum’s successful show is now getting a reboot after 15 years on the air with the German supermodel. The gorgeous long-legged Klum decided to go into new ventures and leave the show to a brand new leading cast of judges.

Karlie Kloss, Brandon Maxwell, Elaine Welteroth, Nina Garcia and Christian Siriano are the faces you’ll be seeing in the new season. The cast already debuted the first episodes, and you can watch Project Runway on Bravo each Thursday.

The fact Heidi left this show does not mean she will stop creating. She and her co-host Tim Gunn are moving on to a fresh project. It will be a fashion-related show, which Klum is still keeping a secret. All we know is that the duo was already casting designers for the show back in January.

The Amazon series will reportedly start shooting in June and July, but the premiere date has yet to be announced. While you’re waiting for it to debut, you can always follow Project Runway.
