This year’s Venice Film Festival was one to remember and it offered the first glimpse at some of the fall’s most anticipated new films. We’re bringing you five critically acclaimed projects that knocked the cinephiles off their feet after having their world premiere in Venice.

Poor Things

Poor Things was honored with the Golden Lion in Venice, while also earning rave reviews from the critics. It follows a young Victorian woman (Emma Stone) who embarks on a journey of self-discovery after being brought back to life by an eccentric scientist.

Priscilla

Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla chronicles Priscilla Presley’s rollercoaster relationship with Elvis Presley from her point of view, and its leading lady Cailee Spaeny won the Volpi Cup for her breakout performance.

Maestro

Biopics about a complicated relationship between famous pop culture icons were all the rage in Venice. Bradley Cooper’s Maestro offers a closer look at the life of the West Side Story composer Leonard Bernstein.

Origin

Ava DuVernay’s latest film chronicles the life and times of writer Isabel Wilkerson and the journey she embarked on while writing her seminal work Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents.

The Killer

Gripping thrillers about brutal killers have always been David Fincher’s forte, and this one stars Michael Fassbender as a professional assassin, embarking on an international manhunt while having a full-on mental breakdown.

We can always count on Venice Film Festival to give us some epic red carpet looks, and this year is no exception. Black and white dresses were the biggest hit with the attendees this year, and these five stars already gave this trend their seal of approval.

Penelope Cruz

Penelope Cruz’s partnership with Chanel is a gift that keeps on giving. She wore several black and white looks by this fashion house, but none compares to this charming gown.

Milena Smit

The rising star Milena Smit, who appears alongside Cruz in Parallel Mothers, also rocked our world in Venice with her sculptured black and white dress by Balmain.

Tiffany Haddish

Haddish also couldn’t resist this rising trend and attended the premiere of her latest movie The Card Counter in a Christian Siriano gown with a white bodice and elegant floor-sweeping train.

Maggie Gyllenhaal

Gyllenhaal has always been a huge fan of simple colors, so it’s not a surprise to see her embrace the black and white trend in a floor-length Prada dress with dramatic white sleeves.

The Venice Film Festival is the longest-running film festival in Europe and it’s also where the most anticipated films of the year debut. The festival marks the start of the fall awards season and many films that were pushed back use the event to gain buzz prior to their world premieres. These films are getting major attention at the Venice Film Festival.

Dune

Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated Dune has drawn lots of attention and much of it has to do with the all-star cast which includes Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, and Dave Bautista, among others. The film received an eight-minute standing ovation. Dune‘s about a young Paul Atreides (Chalamet), scion of the noble House of Atreides, which oversees the barren desert planet Arrakis, known as Dune.

Last Night in Soho

Edgar Weight’s psychological thriller starring The Queen’s Gambit‘s Anya Taylor-Joy, also received a five-minute standing ovation. The film follows Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie) as she travels back in time to the 1960s and meets her idol, a singer named Sandy (Taylor-Joy), but her journey is anything but smooth.

Spencer

Starring Kristen Stewart, Spencer received a three-minute standing ovation. Stewart is expected to receive her first Oscar nomination for the role in which she plays the princess over the course of three days during a Christmas holiday and deals with Diana’s decision to end her marriage to Prince Charles (Jack Farthing).

It’s never too early to start predicting the next year’s Oscar winners, but the race usually heats up during the fall’s festival season. The first major contenders are emerging, and Nomadland established itself as the most serious candidate after two major festival wins.

This poignant drama about an elderly woman who becomes a van-dwelling modern-day nomad stars Frances McDormand, and it had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. It was instantly met with critical acclaim and went on to win the Golden Lion.

After winning in Venice, Nomadland also won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival, becoming the first film in history to pick up top awards at both festivals. Many movies that won big at TIFF, including Green Book and 12 Years a Slave went on to win the best picture at the Oscars, so could Nomadland be the next one in line?

The race is still too early to call, and many other top Oscar contenders still haven’t seen the light of day. Nomadland is a huge hit with art-house lovers, but we’re yet to see if the Oscar voters will respond to its slow pace.

David Fincher’s passion project Mank could stand a much better chance because Academy members have a habit of going for movies about filmmaking. An Oscar victory is also long-overdue for Fincher, but it’s too early to judge this movie since the critics are yet to see it.

This year’s Venice Film Festival has given us many amazing red carpet trends, but one ended up stealing the show. Daring and classy dresses with V neck were present at each film premiere during this A-list event, and we’re bringing you some of the very best.

Isabel May

May is a relatively a newcomer in Hollywood, but she made us fall in love with her flawless style after hitting the red carpet in this dazzling, chocolate brown gown by Valentino.

Frida Aasen

The Norwegian fashion model channeled her inner Greek goddess in this magical Alberta Ferretti dress with a plunging neckline.

Arizona Muse

Muse put a twist on this trend with her ruffled red gown by Alberta Ferretti. She took a stand for eco-friendly fashion with this look, made sustainably with organic chiffon.

Cate Blanchett

Cate Blanchett was the biggest fashion star of this year’s festival and she embraced the V neck trend with this simple, yet classy Armani dress.

Anna Foglietta

Alberta Ferretti and Armani put dresses with deep V cut on the map, but Etro helped us fall in love with it with this Swarovski-encrusted column gown.

Fall usually marks the comeback of the film festival season, and several major festivals are taking place around the world amid the global pandemic. They marked the return of classic red carpet events and gave us several Oscar contenders, but is there anything about them that feels different?

Venice Film Festival and Deauville Film Festival both concluded this weekend, with Nomadland and The Nest taking top honors. Both festivals featured classic premieres, and the stars attending them hit the red carpet with face masks, before taking them off to pose for pictures, with photographers at the safe distance.

Will all the film festivals taking place this fall have a similar format? Not really. Toronto Film Festival is currently in full swing, and it’s a combination of physical and digital screenings, virtual red carpets, press conferences, and industry talks.

Many of the major festivals are expected to take a similar form this fall. AFI Fest is going online in October, New York Film Festival will feature drive-in and virtual screenings, while the London Film Festival is expected to offer 50 virtual premieres. Physical events will be available, but it’s highly unlikely we’ll get to witness the kind of spectacle that we saw in Venice.

In recent years, celebrities have used the red carpet to make a statement. They’ve worn all-black looks, pins with messages, and even auctioned off looks post-event for charity. Last week, the 2020 Venice Film Festival started and Cate Blanchett made her own statement by wearing looks that she wore on the red carpet in the past.

Blanchett is the jury president and she kicked off the opening night’s red carpet in a Esteban Cortazar shimmery navy blue gown with flowy white sleeves and a high-low hem. What’s even more special about the gown is that she wore it at the 2015 BFI London Film Festival premiere for her film Carol.

Blanchett’s stylist, Elizabeth Stewart, posted the look of Instagram with the caption, “IT’S CHIC TO REPEAT! #CateBlanchett has decided to rewear some of her most cherished looks at this year’s Venice Film Festival, like this @estebancortazarofficial worn to tonight’s Opening that was first worn to a premiere in 2015. In her words, Beautiful things can come out of sustainability!”

The next night, Blanchett wore another familiar look from Alexander McQueen that she was seen in at the 2016 BAFTAs. When she wore the look in 2016, the floral red and gold top was paired with a black, feather-covered skirt, but for the Venice Film Festival, the Academy Award-winning actress wore it with black pants and a matching blazer. “#CateBlanchett is committed to a sustainable red carpet. One way is re-working past iconic looks!”, Stewart wrote about the outfit.

These looks as well as the rest of Blanchett’s outfits from the festival will be auctioned off by Stewart’s nonprofit Chic Relief, with 100% of the proceeds going towards UN Women and Facing History and Ourselves. The auction’s being done by Red Carpet Advocacy (RAD) and festival outfits from Tilda Swinton, Demi Moore, Gia Coppola, and Maya Hawke will also be donated.

We look forward to seeing if the rest of Blanchett’s outfits at the Venice Film Festival will be looks from past red carpet events.

Roma

Alfonso Curaron’s Roma made its premiere at the festival. The movie is an homage to Cuaron’s home in Mexico. Like his blockbuster hit Gravity, the movie stunned audiences with its outstanding visuals.

A Star is Born

Bradley Cooper’s remake of the 1937 classic charmed the critics with its deep sense of romanticism and Gaga and Cooper’s wonderful performances.

Peterloo

Peterloo recounts the 1819 massacre of Peterloo. This historical drama is Mike Leigh’s first film since 2014’s Mr. Turner.

Although critics have been divided by the movie, the highly anticipated remake with Thom Yorke’s original score is definitely one to look out for in the cinema.

It’s never too early to start predicting the next year’s Oscar winners, but the race usually heats up during the fall’s festival season. The first major contenders are emerging, and Nomadland established itself as the most serious candidate after two major festival wins.

If you think it’s impossible to look fashionable with a face mask on, the ladies at this year’s Venice Film Festival are here to prove you wrong. Before posing for photos at a safe distance, many of our favorite stars made sure to stay safe by hitting the red carpet with face masks.

Cate Blanchett

Blanchett is the jury president at this year’s Venice Film Festival, and she was spotted with a face mask during several outings, red carpet events, and press conferences, while still managing to look as classy as ever.

The Crown star promoted her new movie Pieces of a Woman in several classy Valentino outfits, and a face mask just happened to be an essential part of her looks.

In addition to wearing regular face coverings during her outings, Swinton stole the show in Venice with her custom-made James Merry mask, inspired by stingray skeletons, seaweed, and orchids.

As Venice Film Festival 2018 draws to a close, here are five of our top picks from the festival so far.

First Man

First Man is an epic drama which recounts the story of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. Ryan Gosling stars as Neil Armstrong and audiences were wow’d by Gosling’s big step for mankind and Damien Chazel’s big step for film.

Turner.

Suspira

Although critics have been divided by the movie, the highly anticipated remake with Thom Yorke’s original score is definitely one to look out for in the cinema.
