This Berlin-Based Fashion Brand Will Have You Drooling

Here at Top Pop Today, we’re big believers that sustainability isn’t at odds with fashion (and vice versa!). Ever on the search for slow fashion brands that put an emphasis on ethics, most recently we’ve come across Berlin-based brand CRUBA. Mira Von Der Osten, the brand’s designer and founder, admits that in a world where everything is fast-paced and companies are measured by their short-term success, it’s challenging to forge a way that is slower. But at the same time, Von Der Osten believes that the future of the fashion industry is “slow”.

“CRUBA stands for Creating a Resolution Using a Berlin Argument,” she further relayed in an interview with Licorne Magazine. “It is a constant starting point as a source of inspiration for the city we live in. Design today is not about designing the new piece; it is rather a service to the women. We are not confined to be minimalistic or extravagant or lush etc. We can be both and our style is an immediate result of what surrounds us.”

The brand, says Von Der Osten, aims at creating clothes that ease the way we inhabit our skin—a worthy goal if any. Having studied fashion at Parsons in NY and Paris, she started CRUBA back in 2009, driven by what she calls “the sensual work of sculpting fabric”.

“Fabrics themselves often unleash flows of inspiration and creativity,” says the designer. Other sources of inspiration include anything from a certain light to an art exhibition. “Here in Berlin one can also feel a Weltschmerz, a world weariness, one of those great German words one cannot really translate,” adds Von Der Osten. “It describes a common longing or pain that is quite inspirational to me. You have to be in tune with everything to be alert to the smallest detail that can get you going.”

According to Von Der Osten, she tries to be a storyteller through her work. She admits that part of her brain tells stories through her designs. These stories, ultimately, stem from her love of people and people watching. The work itself, says Von Der Osten, brings her closer to people and closer to the world.
