What’s Going on with The CW’s “The Powerpuff Girls” Reboot

The announcements of reboots of our favorite childhood shows are always taken with a grain of salt, and The Powerpuff Girls was no different. The CW is currently developing a live-action version of the beloved Cartoon Network animated series, but what is it all about?

The Powerpuff Girls reboot started filming in early April, with Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, and Yana Perrault playing Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. But when behind-the-scenes images started circulating online, fans weren’t too pleased with what they’ve seen.

Twitter users dragged the costume department, saying they’ve seen Halloween and Comic-Con costumes better than these ones. The CW quickly did damage control by releasing a first look at the characters wearing modern clothes, saying they only wear the viral costumes in flashbacks to their teenage years.

The Powerpuff Girls reboot will focus on the titular trio as grown-ups, and its official logline says it centers on “disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting.” Despite the costume debacle, this updated version looks pretty promising because Heather Regnier and the Oscar winner Diablo Cody are in charge of writing it.

The release date of The Powerpuff Girls remains a mystery, because the series only got a pilot order and filming is currently underway.
