Netflix is a streaming giant known for its captivating original content. But now it’s also venturing into the world of video games with one of its most acclaimed series, Squid Game. Here’s a sneak peek into what you can expect.

Coming in 2024

Netflix has previously dabbled in game adaptations with titles like Stranger Things. And now, Netflix’s gaming division has officially announced a Squid Game adaptation as part of its gaming lineup for 2024. This news has left many wondering why it didn’t happen sooner. The format is perfect.

The Perfect Mini-Games

Squid Game, the series, is essentially a collection of life-or-death mini-games. It’s easy to envision how these gripping challenges can translate into an interactive experience. You may find yourself navigating the deceitful world of red light, green light, or attempting to master the iconic honeycomb challenge. So if you dreamed of participating in the epic game, you don’t have to wait too much longer.

Mobile Gaming

While the prospect of a Squid Game video game might bring to mind images of epic console adventures, Netflix games typically cater to mobile platforms. So the Squid Game game is likely to be designed for smartphones and tablets. On the flip side, this adds another layer of accessibility.

The gaming world has been buzzing with anticipation. Finally, Rockstar Games has unveiled the first trailer for “Grand Theft Auto 6” (GTA6). The release has given fans an exciting glimpse into what the latest installment of this iconic series holds. Here’s a breakdown of everything we know so far.

The Trailer

The trailer introduces us to GTA6’s playable characters. It features a couple united in love and crime, marking a new narrative direction for the series. It showcases modern-day Vice City and its surrounding wetlands, hinting at a vast and immersive world. The trailer also teases how in-game social media might influence gameplay, and interestingly, features crocodiles, adding a new layer to the game’s environment.

There’s also a brief look at a building labeled “Hotel Dixon”, suggesting a deeper connection to the current GTA Online universe. This link to the existing game world could imply a more integrated experience across Rockstar’s GTA titles.

Release Window and Platforms

GTA6 is set for release in 2025, a bit later than many fans anticipated. The game will be available on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. As of now, there’s no confirmation regarding a PC version, but given the series’ history, it’s likely to be announced at a later date.

For the past three decades, the Electronic Entertainment Expo aka E3 has been the Mecca of the gaming world, but those days are long behind us. After several rocky years, E3 has officially been shut down, and its cancelation is a huge deal for the gaming world at large.

E3 was originally launched in 1995, and it grew into the world’s largest and most prestigious gaming expo in the years to come. Unfortunately, it became pretty clear that its glory days were long behind it even before its official cancelation, after the COVID-19 pandemic made it clear that the gaming convention of its scope is no longer a necessity in the modern world.

Entertainment Software Association officially announced its cancelation in a press release, saying they’ve decided to bring E3 to a close, but added they remain “focused on advocating for ESA member companies and the industry workforce who fuel positive cultural and economic impact every day.”

The COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancelation of E3 from 2020-2022, but this year has been a different story. The 2023 convention was put on hold due to a lack of “sustained interest”, making it clear that the modern gaming industry moved on from this concept. Geoff Keighley, the founder of the Game Awards, openly spoke against it, saying that online events are a better alternative to in-person ones, and launched his own Summer Game Fest in 2020.

Baldur’s Gate 3 made quite a splash when it hit the shelves this summer, and it’s finally getting credit where credit is due! The list of the Game Awards winners is in, and the hit RPG video game led the way with six wins, including the coveted game of the year trophy.

Baldur’s Gate 3 defeated the likes of Alan Wake 2, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Resident Evil 4, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder to win the biggest award of the night.

Timothée Chalamet, who repeatedly spoke about being a keen gamer himself, surprised the audience at this year’s ceremony when he showed up on stage to announce the game of the year winner. He was introduced as “ModdedController360”, the name of the long-delated YouTube channel he used as a teenager.

Baldur’s Gate 3 emerged victorious in five more categories – best performance, best community support, best role-playing game, best multiplayer game, and best player’s voice.

Alan Wake 2 was right behind with three awards and it won big in some of the most significant categories, including best direction, best narrative, and best art direction. Forza Motorsport was the only remaining game with multiple awards with two, including best sports/racing game.

Fortnite Festival is finally hitting the shelves this weekend, and expectations are running higher than ever. Here’s everything you should know about this newly launched Fortnite mode, including its full setlist and an exclusive A-list headliner.

Game Details

Epic Games describes Fortnite Festival as “a new music game where players can play in a band with friends or perform solo on stage with hit music by their favorite artists.” Fortnite previously joined forces with Travis Scott and Eminem for music-inspired experiences, and launching the Festival mode seemed like a logical next step.

Headliner

The Weeknd will serve as the headliner of the Fortnite Festival when this new mode launches on December 9. He’ll perform four songs to get us excited about this game, including his smash hits “Blinding Lights,” “The Hills,” “Save Your Tears”, and “Take My Breath”.

Setlist

As for the rest of the setlist, Fortnite Festival will feature an epic mix of beloved classics and modern hits. Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, Fall Out Boy, Kendrick Lamar, and Olivia Rodrigo are some of the artists to make the cut, but the setlist offers a great mix of different styles and genres. Approximately 30 songs are included in the current rotation, but it’s safe to expect that the list will expand over time.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is one of the most-anticipated video games in recent years, and its first trailer created quite a commotion on social media. The first promotional video for the sixth installment in the GTA franchise already crossed the 100 million mark on YouTube and set several records in its wake.

Grand Theft Auto 6 takes us to Vice City, modeled after modern-day Miami, and it centers on the franchise’s first female protagonist Lucia. She’s an inmate at a Vice City Prison at the very start of the trailer, but she doesn’t stay there for too long, and we get to watch her flee the police and commit a series of crimes with an unnamed male lead.

The release of the GTA 6 trailer was meant to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this franchise, and it created quite a commotion on social media. It became the most-viewed video game reveal and non-music video on YouTube in its first 24 hours, and the third-most viewed overall with 90 million views.

GTA 6 was a long time coming and fans of this franchise have been patiently waiting for its release since Grand Theft Auto V in 2013. Rockstar Games is yet to officially announce its release date, but it’s expected to arrive in 2025.

It’s been reported that TikTok is planning to make a major push into gaming just last year, but it seems their plans have changed. TikTok maker ByteDance is scaling down its Nuverse gaming brand, casting a shadow of doubt over the mini-games that run on this social media platform.

Reuters was the first to break the news about Nuverse’s future, reporting that ByteDance wants to wind down this brand and retreat from mainstream video games. They reportedly told the employees to stop working on unreleased games by December and are looking for ways to divest from the already launched titles.

A ByteDance’s spokesperson addressed the news by simply saying, “We regularly review our businesses and make adjustments to center on long-term strategic growth areas. Following a recent review, we’ve made the difficult decision to restructure our gaming business.”

Reuters reports this decision won’t affect casual games that run on TikTok or TikTok’s sister app Douyin, launched by the gaming brand Ohayoo.

Marvel Snap the most notable game created by Nuverse, also shouldn’t be affected by ByteDance’s decision. According to their official statement, Marvel Snap will continue to operate and flourish in the future, regardless of any changes at Nuverse.

TikTok had an undeniable impact on the music industry in recent years, and they’re getting ready to take things one step further. This social media service introduced a brand-new feature, allowing its users to add music from TikTok to third-party music streaming services.

TikTok introduced the “Add to Music App” feature in partnership with Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. They’re rolling it out in the United States and the United Kingdom, but plan to introduce it in other markets, as well, in the upcoming months.

According to TikTok’s official announcement, this feature is meant to create “a direct link between discovery on TikTok and consumption on a music streaming service, making it easier than ever for music fans to enjoy the full-length song on the music streaming service of their choice, thereby generating even greater value for artists and rightsholders.”

Even before TikTok introduced this new feature, its impact on the music industry was impossible to deny. Several songs found viral popularity and climbed to the top of the charts thanks to this streaming service, from Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” to “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Encanto. TikTok even partnered up with Billboard to launch a brand-new chart tracking the most popular songs on this social media platform earlier this year.

This year’s Game Awards are less than a month away, and we finally know who’ll be competing for the shiny trophies at this ceremony. The list of nominations is in, and Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 are leading the way with eight nods each, including game of the year.

These successful sequels will be competing for the ceremony’s main award—game of the year—along with Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Capcom’s Resident Evil 4, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 by Insomniac Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Nintendo is the most nominated publisher this year with 14 nods, largely thanks to the success of its smash hits The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Sony Interactive Entertainment and Epic Games are right behind with nine nominations, followed by Capcom, Larian Studios, and Square Enix with eight each.

In addition to traditional video games, the list of nominees also includes e-sports games, teams, and creators. The winners will be determined by an expert jury panel (90%), while the public voting held via the official website and Discord server will account for 10% of the votes.

The 2023 Game Awards will be live-streamed from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on December 7, with Geoff Keighley serving as the host.
