TikTok is now one of the biggest social media platforms out there, so it’s no wonder that it has a major influence on trends in areas including fashion, wellness, skincare, beauty, and fitness. Some of these trends may be passing fads, but others are here to stay. Here’s our lowdown on three of the biggest TikTok trends that will stick around long into 2024.

Skincare

There’s a load of skincare information and advertising on TikTok, but one of the products that managed to stand out above the rest is Mighty Patch. These small skincare patches are packed full of zit-busting ingredients including glycolic and salicylic acid, and have garnered a huge following for their effectiveness in reducing the size and appearance of spots overnight.

BookTok

Who doesn’t love a healthy, wholesome trend? BookTok is the side of TikTok dedicated to a community of people who love reading and books. Whether it’s tips on the hottest new releases, ideas for color curating your home library, or sharing beautiful quotes from favorite reads, BookTok has helped generate interest (and sales) in books.

1-Minute Workouts

We all know that we should do as much physical exercise as possible, but in the average working week, it’s just not possible to squeeze in long workouts on top of everything else. Enter the TikTok trend for one-minute (or at least very short) workouts. Whether it’s grooving along to your favorite song, squat jumping for one minute or holding a plank, the app has seen an explosion in short, doable workouts. Fitting a few of these in over your week can really help to improve your fitness, so this is no passing fad.

2023 has given us countless viral memes and internet trends, and we often had to turn to Google to keep up with all of them. The world’s leading search engine recently released its list of the most searched terms of the year, and here are five internet trends that made the cut.

Roman Empire

This viral trend saw women asking men in their lives how often they think about the Roman Empire. This craze led to many hilarious interactions on TikTok, inspired an SNL spoof starring Jason Momoa, and popularized the term “My Roman Empire”.

Moon Phase

Astrology has been having a moment on TikTok for quite some time. The “moon phase soulmate” trend was all about finding out if you’re compatible with your significant other based on the moon phase from when you were born.

AI Yearbook

Artificial intelligence was the culprit behind many viral trends in 2023, including this one. We’ve seen everyone from A-list celebrities to influencers use the power of AI to create yearbook photos with a retro 90s feel.

Instagram Notes

After Instagram introduced its Notes feature earlier this year, Gen-Z users started posting mysterious numbers, meant to spell out the name of their crush.

Fruit Roll-Ups

Fruit roll-ups were having a moment on TikTok this year, and we’ve seen many people filling them with ice cream to create a delicious new snack.

If you’ve been scrolling through TikTok lately, you may have come across the “girl math” trend. Often intended as a joke, this trend involves women justifying purchases by using their poor math skills to work out the expense. Whilst this is meant as a light-hearted trend, there are some issues with it, including those outlined here.

It Perpetuates a Stereotype

There is a widespread belief that boys are naturally better at math than girls, even though there is no hard evidence for this. In fact, many young girls are put off math by witnessing and absorbing societal attitudes towards women and math. The girl math trend perpetuates the idea that women can’t handle numbers and guess their way through their financial decisions. This is unhelpful for everyone and increases the expectation that young girls won’t be naturally gifted at math.

It Encourages Unnecessary Spending

In the late ’90s and early 2000s, most films and TV shows about women featured at least one emotions-induced shopping spree. Whilst these depictions may have lessened since the 2008 crash (which made such frivolity seem unattainable to most), the girl math trend implies that unnecessary—and sometimes unaffordable—spending is OK if you can “girl math” your way out of it. Whilst how we spend our disposable income is up to each individual, with the cost of living crisis hitting many people hard this can be an irresponsible message, especially for younger women and teens.

Unequal Dynamics

The girl math trend implies, through its depictions of women maxing out their credit cards or justifying another designer purchase, that ultimately these women’s boyfriends can pick up the bills that matter, such as the mortgage or rent. Whilst this may be some people’s setup, it’s certainly not true for everyone—and it harks back to a more traditional (some would say restrictive) dynamic in which the man in the relationship focuses on the “serious” stuff, leaving his wife or girlfriend to indulge herself in mindless shopping.

From selfies to carbon footprint, many words we now use on a daily basis were once chosen as Oxford’s word of the year. “Rizz” is the next one in line, but what does this buzzy term actually mean and how did it earn Oxford’s coveted honor?

According to Oxford’s press release, having “rizz” means commanding attention and having a whole lot of charisma, and here’s how they defined this word:

“Pertaining to someone’s ability to attract another person through style, charm, or attractiveness, this term is from the middle part of the word ‘charisma’, which is an unusual word formation pattern.”

According to Oxford’s report, the use of this word has increased dramatically in 2023, especially after Tom Holland’s viral interview in June, after he said “‘I have no rizz whatsoever.” The buzzy term even got Merriam-Webster stamp of approval, and was one of 690 new words added to the renowned dictionary back in September.

“Rizz” had to beat tough competition to be named Oxford’s word of the year. The list of finalists also included such words as prompt (an instruction given to an AI program), situationship (a relationship that is not considered to be formal or established), and Swiftie (an enthusiastic fan of Taylor Swift). Words beige flag, de-influencing, heat dome, and parasocial made it to Oxford’s shortlist for 2023.

From cottagecore to coastal grandma, TikTok introduced us to many trendy aesthetics over the years, and “Meg Ryan Fall” is the latest taking this social media platform by storm. What is this viral craze all about and how does Meg Ryan feel about the fact she’s the face of it?

The “Meg Ryan Fall” trend is all about recreating the outfits from the star’s most iconic rom-coms from the ’80s and ’90s. Her filmography includes such cult classics as When Harry Met SallyYou’ve Got Mail, and Sleepless in Seattle, and her outfits from these feel-good films truly stood the test of time.

Chunky sweaters, baggy trousers or dad jeans, oversized wool blazers, loafers, and bowler hats are some of the must-have items you’ll need to channel your inner Meg Ryan. Even though most of her films came out decades earlier, some of the fashion items she used to wear back then are still just as trendy today.

In a recent interview with People, the Golden Globe-nominated actress revealed how she feels about “Meg Ryan Fall” and shared some styling tips with her fans.

“It is the cutest thing ever. I saw pictures of girls trying on hats. I don’t know why it has anything remotely to do with me, but it is so sweet. It kills me… There are certain types of blazers that I like. There’s certain flat shoes, basically orthopedic-looking shoes, and baggy pants,” Ryan told People.

Home-cooking influencer Susi Vidal recently shared her favorite recipe for homemade pesto on TikTok – and started a surprising viral trend along the way. The opening words of her videos sparked a hilarious response on this social media platform and inspired TikTok users to share some pretty crazy stories with the world.

It all started when Vidal opened her video for homemade pesto with this now iconic line – “Call me crazy if you want, but I’ve never liked store-bought pesto.” Her delivery sparked an avalanche of hilarious comments, and TikTokers quickly started posting viral stitches of her original video.

@susi.vidal

the only pesto recipe you need: 1c basil, 1/3c parmesan, 1/4c olive oil, 2 large garlic cloves, 1 1/2tbsp pine nuts, 1tbsp lemon juice, pinch of salt! Blend until smooth! 💚

Vidal’s video quickly generated over 10 million views after people started using its opening line to share their own crazy stories. From opening up about their near-death experiences to joking about clogging a toilet at a company party, no topic was on limits when it came to jumping on this viral trend.

Vidal is on the joke herself, and she took part in this trend by sharing the story about the first time she took a drink. She said it felt “bizarre” to see her video start a viral craze, but she doesn’t mind it because it’s all in good fun.

“The fact that they took this two-minute-long pesto video, used the little beginning part, and decided to tell these insane stories, I think is a very creative thing. It’s also entertaining. I love watching them now,” she told Today.

TikTok is a great place to discover new beauty trends, and “everything shower” is the latest craze taking this social media platform by storm. This self-care practice is all about going through all of the steps of your wellness routine at once, and it will do wonders for your mind, body, and soul.

The name of this trend pretty much explains what it’s all about – having a shower where you’re going to take care of literally everything. This means different things to different people, but “everything shower” generally means taking care of all your beauty needs at once, from washing your hair and shaving to exfoliating, cleansing, and moisturizing after your long shower session.

“Everything shower” is not a new thing, but we can thank TikTok for giving this self-care practice a new buzzy name and making it even more popular. The videos under the “everything shower” hashtag have been seen over 400 million times because they’re both insightful and relatable.

’90s nostalgia has been going strong for quite some time, and internet users are now using the power of AI to get transported to this era. AI-generated yearbook photos are having a moment on Instagram and TikTok, but what is this viral craze all about?

We’ve seen internet users utilize the power of artificial intelligence in all sorts of different ways in the past few months, and they’re now using it to travel back to the ’90s. AI-generated yearbook photos with a retro vibe are having a moment on Instagram and TikTok, and we’ve even seen several celebrities give them their seal of approval.

@epikapp how to get those AI yearbook photos in EPIK 🎒📚🥰 #epikapp #epik #aiyearbook #yearbooktrend #tutorial ♬ baby one more time – kpopvrycs

Keke Palmer hopped on this trend, sharing AI-generated photos that show her posing as a basketball player, cheerleader, bookworm, and everything in between. YouTubers James Charles, Bretman Rock, and Hila Klein also hopped on this trend, along with talk show hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager.

We owe these AI-generated photos to the South Korean AI photo editing app Epik AI, and making your own doesn’t come free. You have to pay between $5.99 and $9.99 to get your photos back, depending on how fast you want them. After sending 12 selfies of yourself, the app will generate 60 different portraits to choose from, embracing all the classic ’90s high school tropes.

@susi.vidal
