After a lot of anticipation, the MTV VMAs nominations are finally in, and Taylor Swift is leading the way with eight nods. It’s not a shocker to see her come on top, but this year’s MTV VMAs nominations brought several snubs and surprises our way that we didn’t see coming.

Surprise: Demi Lovato – “Swine”

Genre nominations at MTV VMAs aren’t always easy to predict, with the exception of the best pop video. This year’s nominations, however, delivered several shockers, starting with Demi Lovato’s “Swine”.

Snub: “Unholy” for Best Collaboration

Sam Smith and Kim Petras received several nominations for their collaboration “Uholy”, including video of the year and song of the year, so it’s quite a shocker to see that they’re not in the running for best collaboration.

Surprise: Karol G and Shakira – “TQG”

Seeing “Unoloy” left out of the best collaboration category didn’t sting too much since many deserving songs made the cut, including “TQG” by Karol G and Shakira.

Snub: Blackpink – “Pink Venom”

Blackpink’s “Pink Venom” was a K-pop song with the best chance to break into the major categories, but it failed to score nods for video and song of the year.

Surprise: Beyoncé

Beyoncé fully deserves to be in the running for artist of the year at MTV VMAs, but it’s pretty surprising to see her get her first nod for this award right now since she didn’t even release a new album this year.

K-pop experienced a huge boom all over the globe thanks to such groups as BTS, Blackpink, and Tomorrow X Together. Many of their members are sharing their solo music with the world this spring, and their solo debuts are proving to be pretty amazing and history-making.

Jimin (BTS)

While BTS is on hiatus, Jimin decided to use the free time on his hands to drop his solo album Face. It debuted at No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 chart, while its latest single “Like Crazy” made history as the first song by a South Korean solo artist to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Jisoo (Blackpink)

Blackpink members Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa all released their solo debut singles in the past, and it was just a matter of time before Jisoo followed suit. Her first solo song “Flower” was released as a part of her debut single album Me, which became the first record by a K-pop female solo artist to cross a million pre-orders.

Suga (BTS)

Suga released several mixtapes during his time with BTS, and he’s now getting ready to drop his first solo LP. He’ll release the album D-Day under his allies on Agust D on April 21, and he’ll celebrate its release by embarking on a first solo tour across Asia and the U.S.

After a two-year-long break, Blackpink is finally gearing up for a comeback! Everyone’s favorite K-pop girl group will soon share their second studio album Born Pink with the world and here’s everything you should know about this highly-anticipated record before its release.

Release Date

Last month, Blackpink’s label YG Entertainment announced “a lot of Blackpink-esque music has been prepared over a long period of time”, hinting at the release of the band’s new album. They later announced that the LP titled Born Pink will hit the shelves in September, but the official release date remains a mystery.

World Tour

Blackpink will promote their new album by embarking on a world tour in October. Official dates haven’t been announced, but YG Entertainment described it as “the largest world tour in the history of a K-pop girl group”.

Tracklist

“Ready for Love” has been released as the first promo single from Born Pink, and the K-pop group joined forces with battle royale video game PUBG Mobile for the animated music video.  This song marks the band’s first release since their 2020 record The Album. They’re expected to release another single later this month before dropping the full album in September.

After finding enormous success with Blackpink, Lisa is proving to the world she’s just as talented on her own. She’s still a member of the popular K-pop girl group, but she recently decided to release some new music without the rest of Blackpink and she’s doing a great job flying solo.

Success of “Lalisa”

Lisa’s solo debut single album Lalisa hit the shelves on September 10th and found instant success. With 73.6 million views during its first day on YouTube, it became the most-viewed video in 24 hours released by a solo artist—and that was just the beginning.

“Lalisa” debuted at no. 2 on the Billboard Global 200 chart, marking Lisa’s first solo entry on this chart. It also entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart and made it to the top ten on Billboard’s digital song sales chart.

“Money” is Coming

In addition to “Lalisa”, Lisa’s solo debut single album also featured B-side track “Money”, and she has big plans with this track, as well. She prepared an exclusive live performance of this song for passionate fans, which comes about a week since she shared a similar special stage performance video of “Lalisa”.

2020 has been a monumental year in the history of the Billboard 200 chart, with several international artists reaching for the stars. Here are three acts that found enormous success in the U.S. with their latest non-English studio albums.

Bad Bunny

Bad Bunny dropped two albums in 2020, and finally managed to top the Billboard 200 with his latest studio effort El Último Tour Del Mundo. What makes the success of this LP so monumental is the fact it’s the first all-Spanish language album in the history of the chart.

BTS

BTS gave us not one, but two chart-topping albums this year with Map of the Soul: 7 and Be. By doing so, they became the fastest group to earn five no. 1 albums since the Beatles, and the first to top the Billboard Hot 100 with a Korean song thanks to “Life Goes On”.

Blackpink

Blackpink is still waiting for their first no. 1 album atop the Billboard 200, but their latest record The Album was pretty monumental. It debuted at no. 2, making this the highest-charting female Korean album, and we’re expecting to see Blackpink breaking its own record in the future.

K-pop has been on the rise for years, and BTS gave us the final proof of total domination of this genre with their song “Dynamite”. This record-breaking song became the first single by an all-South Korean act to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but several other tracks came close to accomplishing this feat.

Psy | “Gangnam Style” (no. 2)

“Gangnam Style” is still remembered as one of the biggest viral hits of the 2010s, and it topped the charts in several countries around the world—but not the US. It peaked at no. 2 and spent seven weeks on this spot, and a total of 31 at the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Psy | “Gentleman” (no. 5)

Most people describe Psy as a one-hit-wonder, but “Gangnam Style” wasn’t his only smash hit. He also made a big splash with the catchy tune “Gentleman”, which reached over a billion views on YouTube and set several major records at the time of its release.

BTS | “On” (no. 4)

Before making history with “Dynamite”, BTS managed to make it to the top 5 earlier this year with “On”. They also scored additional two top 10 hits—”Fake Love” and “Boy with Luv” featuring Halsey.

Blackpink | “How You Like That” (no. 33)

Blackpink is yet to get one of their songs into the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. “How You Like That” peaked at no. 33, but their Selena Gomez collaboration “Ice Cream” is showing a lot of promise, and it has the potential to become their biggest hit to date.

We can’t discuss the latest trends in music and not mention South Korean bands like BTS and Blackpink who are on their way to conquering the West. Bands like these have always had a big fanbase, but they recently started doing their songs in English, gaining even more fans all over the world.

On August 27th, Blackpink and Selena Gomez premiered their new song called “Ice Cream” after weeks of teasing fans. The song is catchy, has an upbeat vibe, and the video is a treat for anyone into retro style.

Once you watch the video and the song gets in your ear, you won’t be able to stop yourself from humming it all day long! We loved watching the video on repeat and catching all the amazing retro outfits the girls wore. And just look at those ‘80s accessories like the see-through phone Gomez is using—they are giving us major nostalgic vibes.

“Throughout the music video we tried to have each look suit that entire set, and we especially focused on wearing bright colors that suit the overall vibe of the music and concept,” Blackpink told CNN Style. “We really wanted to portray that fun, bright, summer energy through our outfits, and we hope this message went through to our fans.”

K-pop band Blackpink recently dropped a colorful music video for “Ice Cream”, their highly-anticipated collaboration with Selena Gomez. They joined forces with Dua Lipa and Lady Gaga in the past, and their fans are hoping they’ll soon team up with one of these artists.

Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande co-wrote “Ice Cream” with Gomez and several other songwriters, and Blackpink fans have high hopes she’ll record a song with this girl group one day.

Billie Eilish

Members of Blackpink called Billie Eilish as one of their dream collaborators, and their fans have been hoping they’ll record a song together ever since.

Taylor Swift

A collaboration between Swift and Blackpink seems far-fetched right now, but there’s hope she’ll fall in love with their music after seeing them join forces with one of her BFFs.

Halsey

Halsey is one of the artists that members of Blackpink desperately want to work with. We can totally see it happening since she’s a huge fan of K-pop and previously recorded a song with BTS.

Doja Cat

If Blackpink decides to record hip-hop inspired song in a nearby future, Doja Cat would be a perfect collaborator, since they share an affinity for bubbly and TikTok-friendly tunes.

The absolute domination of K-pop bands was a long time coming, and they’re shining brighter than ever in 2020. Some are even surprising us with brand-new songs, recorded entirely in English.

The first single that comes to mind is, obviously, BTS’s record-breaking smash hit “Dynamite” that come out last week. After collaborating with several international artists and giving us catchy tracks recorded partly in English, BTS went all in with this single—and it paid off big time! The music video for “Dynamite” became YouTube’s most viewed video in the first 24 hours.

The enormous success of BTS’ latest single overshadowed another English-language K-pop track that came out that same day. The all-girl group Twice also tried to improve their global appeal with the English version of their hit single “More and More”.

Does this mean there are more K-pop tracks entirely in English on the way? We’re really hoping that’s the case, and we’re betting on Blackpink to give us the next big hit. Their latest single, “How You Like That,” was mostly in English anyway, and they have a new Selena Gomez collaboration titled “Ice Cream” coming up this month.
