]]>Disney’s Wish hit the theaters just in time for Thanksgiving, but its box office numbers are anything but a dream come true. This animated fantasy movie is the latest Disney project to struggle at the box office, but what’s the reason behind its disappointing $49 million global gross?
Lack of Promo
The cast of Wish, including its leading stars Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine, had very little time to promote the film because it came out only two weeks after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Mixed Reception
The critics haven’t been kind to Wish after it came out, and the film currently holds a pretty low rating of 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. Disney wanted to use Wish to mark its 100th anniversary by tying together several major themes from most Disney films into one, but this led to a story that leaned too heavily into nostalgia and had nothing new to say.
Tough Competition
Wish finished third behind The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and Napoleon during its debut week, and failed to meet its projections with a disappointing $49 million earned globally. Songbirds & Snakes was definitely its toughest competition after becoming a huge word-of-mouth hit and exceeding its box office projections.

]]>2021 has been a rocky year for theaters, and Disney tried to bypass this problem by simultaneously releasing their projects in theaters and through Disney+. They’re ready to change their theatrical strategy, but what can be expected from their latest change?
Bigger Theatrical Windows
Instead of being released simultaneously on Disney+, many of the studio’s upcoming movies will get a 45-day exclusive run in cinemas. This shift will apply to Marvel’s Eternals (November 5), and 20th Century Studios projects The Last Duel (October 15), Ron’s Gone Wrong (October 22), West Side Story (December 10), and The King’s Man (December 22). Disney’s animated feature Encanto will get a 30-day exclusive theatrical window on November 24 before heading to Disney+.
Reasons Behind the Big Shift
According to Kareem Daniel, the chairman of Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution, they decided to update their theatrical plans due to “the tremendous box office success of [their] summer films” and expressed hope that the confidence in movie-going will continue to improve.
Daniel didn’t name any films in particular, but one of the movies she’s obviously referring to is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. This superhero flick shattered Labor Day records in the middle of the pandemic, but Black Widow, Cruella, and Free Guy also had a strong showing in the theaters.

]]>Disney’s newest film Cruella, based on the character Cruella de Vil from Disney’s 1961 animated film One Hundred and One Dalmatians, is set to be released at the end of the month and the hype for it is high, especially as the title character will be played by Hollywood starlet, Oscar winner, and American sweetheart, Emma Stone.
As part of the promotional campaign for the film, Disney is collaborating with American fashion label Rag & Bone to release a collection inspired by the movie and the villain. The line includes both footwear and apparel, including things like trucker jackets, tweed skirts, and bomber jackets.
The collection features lots of red and black, ripped denim, sexy silhouettes, and a villainous attitude. So whether you’ve always had a soft spot for the misunderstood Disney villainness, are super excited about the movie, or just really like a punk-inspired outfit, the collection is well worth checking out.
And if you’re the type to cosplay, this is definitely a subtle yet Disney-approved way to do it. Just saying. Check out the collection’s teaser video below to get a sense of the collection for yourself.

After several major delays, the origin story of the iconic Disney villain Cruella de Vil is set to make us fall in love with theaters again before summer even arrives.
Luca (June 18)
Pixar’s next animated film is a coming-of-age tale set in the Italian Riviera, which follows two boys who are secretly sea monsters disguised as humans. In addition to being released theatrically around the world, Luca will stream worldwide on Disney+.
Black Widow (July 9)
Marvel’s first movie to hit the theaters since the pandemic hit, the stand-alone Black Widow is one of the most anticipated superhero movies in years and you shouldn’t miss it for the world.
Jungle Cruise (July 30)
Starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, this film is based on the popular Disneyland ride of the same name. It focuses on a skilled riverboat captain and an adventurous scientist venturing into the jungle to find the Tree of Life.

]]>Over the past few years, Disney has been revisiting the classics to make live-action movies. So far, we’ve seen The Jungle Book, Maleficent, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Bambi, and most recently Mulan has been set for a September 4 release date on Disney +. In 2020, we haven’t seen a lot of new releases due to production and releases being put on hold because of COVID-19, but we’ve been hearing lots of remakes that are in the works. Disney live-action remakes don’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon, and here are just a few of the films we have to look forward to over the next year or so.
Cruella
The 101 Dalmatians spinoff with Emma stone playing Cruella De Vil managed to finish production before the industry-wide shut down due to the pandemic. The live-action remake will be the first release to hit theaters after Mulan, and although it was supposed to be released Christmas 2020, it’s going to be released Summer 2021.
The Little Mermaid
The live-action film starring Grown-ish’s Halle Bailey as Ariel was supposed to start production in March. We can’t wait to see Melissa McCarthy as Ursala, Awkwafina as Scuttle, and Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, and Jacob Tremblay as Flounder.
Hercules
The 1997 Hercules live-action film is still in development, but we do know that Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Endgame) have been associated with this film, although they won’t be directing. Fans are hoping Ariana Grande will be cast as Meg.
Peter Pan
Back in March, Peter Pan’s live remake announced that they found the leads in newcomers Ever Anderson and Alexander Maloney. We also can’t wait to see Jude Law as Captain Hook.
Pinnochio
We haven’t heard much else after 2018 when rumors spread about Tom Hanks playing Gepetto in the live-action remake. In 2020, Robert Zemeckis was announced as the director and co-writer of the film, but we haven’t heard more about casting.

The Dole Whip was first officially introduced in 1986, and it went on to become one of Disneyland’s fan-favorite snacks. Many DIY recipes emerged since, but this is the first time that Disney officially shared their own.
With so many of their theme parks closed down, Disney is sharing some of their signature recipes through Disneyland app My Disney Experience, for everyone who wants to try them in quarantine — and it’s finally Dole Whip’s turn.
Dole Whip is surprisingly easy to make, and it turns out you only need three ingredients – big scoop of vanilla ice cream, 4 ounces of pineapple juice, and two cups of frozen pineapple. After blending them all together, you just need to make a swirl and feel like you’ve been transported to Disneyland while enjoying your Dole Whip.
