House of the Dragon

After years in development, one of the highly-anticipated Game of Thrones sequels will see the light of day next year, and HBO finally gave us a first look. The first teaser for House of the Dragon is here and offers first glimpses at the beginning of the end of House Targaryen.

Peacemaker

If John Cena’s Peacemaker happened to be your favorite part of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, you’ll be happy to hear he’s getting his own stand-alone series. The first hilarious clip from Peacemaker sees Cena returning to this role, and we can’t wait to see what he has in store when this series premieres in January 2022.

And Just Like That…

Unlike the previous two “first look” clips, this one mostly consists of behind-the-scenes footage, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting. It shows Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon return as their iconic Sex and the City characters to announce this revival is coming to HBO Max in December.

Since its launch last year, HBO Max has only been available in North and Latin America, but that’s going to change pretty soon. The popular streaming service is finally launching in Europe, but what can we expect from its global extension?

HBO Max will become available in Europe on October 26th, but it will only be available in six European territories following its launch. It will debut in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Spain, and Andorra, while the rest of Europe will have to wait.

Despite the fact it will only be available to new and existing customers of HBO España and HBO Nordic, this is a historic moment for this streaming service, according to Johannes Larcher, head of HBO Max International.  

“WarnerMedia movies and series are passionately consumed by fans all across Europe, and HBO Max has been created to provide them with the most intuitive and convenient viewing experience to watch these and a diverse range of other amazing titles,” said Larcher in a statement.

HBO Max’s rollout is expected to continue in other European countries throughout 2022, but the launch date is yet to be announced. This streaming service serves as a content hub for WarnerMedia’s various film and television properties, and its original programming currently includes critically acclaimed shows The Flight Attendant and Hacks.

Warner Bros. and HBO Max tried to debunk them by releasing the joint statement that reads, “There are no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform.”

Even if there’s no truth to these rumors, it’s not difficult to see why they started circling around. HBO Max is already developing reboots of Gossip Girl and Sex and the City, so what’s one more? Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis are expected to return to their respective roles from the original show, making this the most exciting HBO Max reboot to date. The new show will be titled And Just Like That… and it will show three BFFs navigating love and friendship in their 50s (without Samantha Jones since Kim Cattrall won’t be returning).

The involvement of the original cast makes this the most exciting HBO Max revivals to date, but it’s not the only one. After failing to make a splash with its launch, this streaming service is starting to heavily rely on nostalgic reboots to pump up its subscriber count.

The release dates of countless highly-anticipated movies were delayed this year amid shutdowns, and once the theaters reopened, their future remained uncertain due to the low viewership numbers. Warner Bros. will try to combat this problem by simultaneously streaming their 2021 movies on HBO Max right after their global cinema release.

According to WarnerMedia’s official release, “the hybrid model was created as a strategic response to the impact of the ongoing global pandemic.”

The first movie they’ll test this strategy with will be Wonder Woman 1984, set to be released on December 25th.

Warner Bros.’ 2021 slate of movies, set to be released both in theaters and on HBO Max, includes a total of 17 titles. Some of them are the most highly-anticipated movies of the year, such as In the Heights, The Suicide Squad, Dune, and Matrix 4.

According to the current strategy, the films in question will be available on HBO Max for the first month of global cinema release, before leaving the platform while still staying in theaters in the U.S. and international territories.

Only time will tell what this historic decision will mean for the movie industry at large, but it’s already making an impact. Stocks in the movie theater industry have drastically dropped after the announcement, with Cinemark and AMC Entertainment taking the biggest hit, and we’re yet to see if any major studios will follow Warner Bros’ lead.
