Reboots Are Becoming the Backbone of HBO Max’s Original Programming

After a lot of rumors and speculations, HBO Max finally confirmed they gave the highly-anticipated revival of The Sex and the City a green light. This is amazing news for fans of the show, but it doesn’t come as a surprise since this isn’t the first buzzy reboot coming to this streaming service.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis are expected to return to their respective roles from the original show, making this the most exciting HBO Max reboot to date. The new show will be titled And Just Like That… and it will show three BFFs navigating love and friendship in their 50s (without Samantha Jones since Kim Cattrall won’t be returning).

The involvement of the original cast makes this the most exciting HBO Max revivals to date, but it’s not the only one. After failing to make a splash with its launch, this streaming service is starting to heavily rely on nostalgic reboots to pump up its subscriber count.

Most notably, HBO Max developed a new Gen Z version of Gossip Girl, set to premiere later this year. The Pretty Little Liars spin-off Original Sin is also on the way, in addition to Grease: Rydell High and Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. HBO Max is planning to release a total of around 50 shows in 2021 alone, and pop culture nostalgia seems to be the driving force behind some of them, but we’re yet to see if this will prove to be the winning formula.
