]]>After months of anticipation, the Academy Award nominations are finally in, with Mank leading the way with 10. The contenders were pretty easy to predict in certain categories, but the list of this year’s Oscar nominees still brought a couple of snubs and surprises our way.
Spike Lee’s latest movie Da 5 Bloods has been a dark horse since the beginning of the race, but seeing it only receive a nomination for the best original score was still a huge disappointment.
Daniel Kaluuya is the front-runner in the best-supporting actor category with Judas and the Black Messiah, but it was a delight to see his co-star LaKeith Stanfield finally get some attention, as well.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom received a total of five Oscar nominations, including two acting nods for Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis, but it was shut out of the best picture category.
Another Round was always a lock for best foreign film nomination, but we didn’t expect to see Thomas Vinterberg take a best director nod for more obvious contenders, including Regina King and Aaron Sorkin.
Speaking of Regina King, her feature debut One Night in Miami failed to get nominated for best picture and best director, while Leslie Odom Jr. ended up being the only cast member to receive an acting nod.

]]>The Academy Award nominations are yet to be announced, but it’s already easy to predict who the winners will be. The race is pretty clear in several major categories, and here’s who’s expected to walk away with shiny statuettes come Oscar night.
It’s still too early to call Nomadland a lock for best picture at the Oscars, but its chances are looking pretty good. It already won several major accolades in this same category, including the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Award.
Chloé Zhao is also expected to pick up an Oscar for directing Nomadland. If she manages to do so, she’ll make history as the only woman alongside Kathryn Bigelow to win this award.
Chadwick Boseman won countless posthumous awards for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and he’s expected to repeat that same success come Oscar night.
Daniel Kaluuya is one of the latecomers to the Oscar race, but his supporting turn in Judas and the Black Messiah is winning awards left and right and his Oscar chances are looking great.
Pixar’s Soul will most certainly walk away with the Oscar for the best-animated feature, but that won’t be the only award it gets. Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor, and Atticus Ross will most likely win a trophy for collaborating on the score for this movie.

]]>The awards season is in full steam with Nomadland, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 as obvious front-runners, but will any of these movies emerge victorious come Oscar night? Several promising projects are yet to come out before the eligibility period is over, and these three could cause a major upset.
When it comes to the acting categories, the Oscar voters have a tendency to reward emotional and raw performances in realistic romance dramas. That perfectly describes the upcoming Netflix original Malcolm & Marie, starring John David Washington and Zendaya.
Set to premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, this true story of petty criminal William O’Neal who agrees to infiltrate the Black Panther Party on behalf of the FBI seems like true Oscar gold. We also have high expectations of its cast, which includes Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield.
The race for the best actress is pretty crowded right now, but several major front-runners already have an Oscar under their belt. The Academy voters have a tendency of giving this award to fresh new faces, such as Zendaya and Vanessa Kirby, but could Andra Day upset them all with her portrayal of Billie Holiday?
