Could Late Releases Upset This Year’s Oscar Race?

Andra Day in "The United States vs. Billie Holiday"

The awards season is in full steam with Nomadland, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 as obvious front-runners, but will any of these movies emerge victorious come Oscar night? Several promising projects are yet to come out before the eligibility period is over, and these three could cause a major upset.

Malcolm & Marie

When it comes to the acting categories, the Oscar voters have a tendency to reward emotional and raw performances in realistic romance dramas. That perfectly describes the upcoming Netflix original Malcolm & Marie, starring John David Washington and Zendaya.

Judas and the Black Messiah

Set to premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, this true story of petty criminal William O’Neal who agrees to infiltrate the Black Panther Party on behalf of the FBI seems like true Oscar gold. We also have high expectations of its cast, which includes Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield.

The United States vs. Billie Holiday

The race for the best actress is pretty crowded right now, but several major front-runners already have an Oscar under their belt. The Academy voters have a tendency of giving this award to fresh new faces, such as Zendaya and Vanessa Kirby, but could Andra Day upset them all with her portrayal of Billie Holiday?
