Both Sony and Disney are tirelessly working on their Marvel movies right now, but their input will look quite different in 2024. Surprisingly enough, Sony will release more films based on Marvel comics than Disney next year, but what’s the reason behind this strange phenomenon?

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe currently includes two Venom films and Morbius, and they’ll be joined by three more in 2024: Madame Web starring Dakota Johnson (February 14), Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson (August 30), and Venom 3 starring Tom Hardy (November 8).

Unlike the MCU, which is currently in Phase Five, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is still in its early days. There are countless intriguing characters still left to explore, and Sony is open to tackling these stories after Venom films found box office success, despite failing to impress the critics.

As for Disney, they only have one MCU film on the way next year: Deadpool 3 on July 26, which took over the release date of Captain America: Brave New World. The Hollywood strikes played a role in this shift, but it’s a good decision overall because Deadpool 3 has the power to revitalize the struggling franchise.

Despite having only one MCU movie on the way in 2024, Disney+ is releasing several new shows in this universe, starting with Echo and Agatha: Darkhold Diaries. Ironheart and Daredevil: Born Again are also on the way, along with several animated series such as Marvel Zombies and Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the latest Marvel movie coming our way and it’s promising one wild ride. Like most other MCU movies, it’s connected to countless other projects, and here are five you should definitely check out before seeing it in theaters.

Doctor Strange

Even though a lot happened since Doctor Strange’s first stand-alone movie, this project is still a must-watch. It introduced us to this character and it wouldn’t make sense to watch its follow-up if you haven’t seen it first.

Spider-Man: No Way Home

Spider-Man: No Way Home featured the last appearance of Doctor Strange leading up to his upcoming standalone movie. It set the stage for this film by effectively introducing the idea of the multiverse in the MCU.

Loki

Even though no major characters from Loki will appear in Doctor Strange 2 (that we know of!), this series is worth a watch because it explored the idea of the multiverse.

What If…?

Episode 4 of the animated series What If…? served as the direct inspiration for Multiverse of Madness and it shows Doctor Strange crossing to the dark side and becoming Strange Supreme.

WandaVision

Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch will be one of the major Marvel characters appearing alongside Doctor Strange and her character arc will be much easier to understand if you’re familiar with the events of WandaVision.

The next Marvel movies went through more release date changes than we can count, and Disney recently shifted its entire MCU theatrical schedule once again. Here are three projects that have been affected by the studio’s most recent change.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 6, 2022)

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will now kick-off Marvel’s 2022 slate, but it’s coming to theaters later than expected. It will premiere in May instead of March. Luckily, we won’t have to wait for that long to see Doctor Strange on the big screen since he’s set to appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home this winter.

Thor: Love and Thunder (July 8, 2022)

The new Doctor Strange movie is taking Thor: Love and Thunder’s previous release date, forcing another major shift in the MCU. It’s always exciting to have a Marvel movie premiere in the middle of the summer, and Taika Waititi’s latest Thor movie is the best possible choice thanks to its humorous and offbeat energy.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (November 11, 2022)

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever went through several major shifts since its announcements, but its latest is the least significant. It’s been moved from October to November 2022, which makes total sense since the movie is still shooting in Atlanta and it won’t wrap up until next month.

Many of the highly-anticipated movies of 2020 were either postponed or put on hold, and Marvel’s projects are no exception. With so many theaters out of operation, we won’t get to see them any time soon, but how long will we wait for that moment to come?

Black Widow was supposed to kick off Marvel’s Phase Four this spring, but those plans fell apart when Disney made a reasonable choice to postpone its release. We’ll have to wait until fall for Natasha Romanoff’s stand-alone movie, since its premiere has been rescheduled for November 6th.

It will take even longer for the rest of Marvel’s upcoming movies to come out, but 2021 will be jam-packed with their projects, including The Eternals (February 12th), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (May 7th), Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel (July 16th), and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (November 5th).

Marvel also has several TV shows in development, scheduled to stream on Disney+, starting with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision, which are both expected to premiere later this year.
