It’s still early to tell if 2021 will be a good year for TV, especially after many shows delayed their production or ended up being canceled in the face of the global pandemic. Yes, some exciting new projects are still coming our way and many of them seem to follow a similar formula.

Reality TV

Love it or hate it, reality TV will be all the rage in 2021, and even streaming services are fully embracing it. Netflix already has a couple of hits on their hands, including Love is Blind and The Circle, and Hulu is ready to get into the game after signing deals with the Kardashian and D’Amelio family.

Disney+ Boom

The Mandalorian is arguably the only hit show that Disney+ gave us since its launch in 2019, but that’s about to change. Many of the Marvel and Star Wars series we’ve been waiting for will finally premiere in 2021, starting with WandaVision.

Endless Reboots

Reboots are certainly not a novelty on the TV scene, and they’ll be going stronger than ever in 2021. HBO Max recently announced they’re bringing Sex and the City back, and the reboots of Gossip Girl, Clueless, and LOTR are already on the way.

When E! announced the end of Keeping Up with the Kardashians earlier this year, some people were quick to announce the death of reality TV as we know it—but they couldn’t have been more wrong. Guilty pleasure reality shows are alive and kicking, and they’ll be going stronger than ever in 2021.

The Bachelor, Survivor, and 90-Day Fiancé have been thriving this year, and many new players entered the reality TV scene as well. After years of giving us prestige dramas and inventive comedies, major streamers came to terms with the fact that reality TV is much more addictive and comes with a lower price tag.

The Circle and Love Is Blind premiered on Netflix this year and found such an enormous success that they’ve been renewed for additional two seasons. This streaming giant is plotting at least 10 reality shows for 2021 at the moment, and we’re expecting this list will get much longer in the months to come.

To make the whole thing even more amazing, Netflix won’t be the only major streamer relying on reality TV next year. Hulu signed a multi-year partnership with the Kardashians after their departure from E!, and they’re also plotting a series that will center on TikTok stars Dixie and Charli D’Amelio and the rest of their family.

It’s been over five months since Hollywood shut down production due to the COVID-19 pandemic and in the past, summer has been the time when reality TV shows start airing. Now that summer’s almost over, reality TV competitions are beginning to return, but with detailed health and safety protocols. Shows have switched filming locations, adjusted formats, changed contestants, or shortened seasons during the pandemic. These are just a few of the reality TV shows that have continued production or are set to air in the next month or so.

Big Brother

Big Brother usually airs in July, but this year the premiere was set back to August 5, and casting wasn’t revealed until the show’s premiere night. This season is All-Stars and the contestants were isolated and tested ahead of the season opener and the live shows have no studio audience.

America’s Got Talent

This summer competition show was in the middle of auditions before being shut down in March. The remaining auditions were held without an audience and production returned in June outdoors with socially distanced and abbreviated Judge Cuts rounds. The live shows are held at the Universal Studios lot, instead of Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.

Love Island

Scheduled to premiere in May, the new season aired August 24 with shooting in Las Vegas instead of in Fiji. Contestants were quarantined and tested before arriving at The Cromwell hotel.

Dancing with the Stars

After announcing that co-hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews wouldn’t be returning for the upcoming season and replacing them with Tyra Banks, the competition show has been set for a September 14 premiere date. The pro dancers have already been announced, but the celebrity cast will be announced at a later date. Details about the format haven’t been released yet and it’s unclear if the show will air live.

Shark Tank

Shark Tank is another reality TV show that will be moving to Las Vegas for Season 12. There hasn’t been a premiere date announced yet, but filming has started.
