Reuters was the first to break the news about Nuverse’s future, reporting that ByteDance wants to wind down this brand and retreat from mainstream video games. They reportedly told the employees to stop working on unreleased games by December and are looking for ways to divest from the already launched titles.
A ByteDance’s spokesperson addressed the news by simply saying, “We regularly review our businesses and make adjustments to center on long-term strategic growth areas. Following a recent review, we’ve made the difficult decision to restructure our gaming business.”
Reuters reports this decision won’t affect casual games that run on TikTok or TikTok’s sister app Douyin, launched by the gaming brand Ohayoo.
Marvel Snap the most notable game created by Nuverse, also shouldn’t be affected by ByteDance’s decision. According to their official statement, Marvel Snap will continue to operate and flourish in the future, regardless of any changes at Nuverse.

Gaming is one of the most lucrative entertainment industries these days, so it’s not a shocker to see major entertainment companies trying to make a push into this world. TikTok’s attempt to set up its own gaming platform comes shortly after Netflix did something similar.
ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese owner, has been developing its own games for quite some time, and this innovation is a no-brainer for the company. Insiders report that game will most likely be accessed via a button on the homepage.
Assaf Sagy, who was appointed TikTok’s head of global gaming last month, sees TikTok and gaming as an organic fit because this social network always strived towards helping consumers discover what’s fun, valuable, and popular.
“TikTok and gaming were made for each other. look forward to working closely with all gaming companies globally to help make TikTok a central foundation in your marketing strategies,” wrote Sagy on LinkedIn.
The company’s first gaming event “TikTok Made Me Play It” is taking place on November 2, and it’s likely that’s when we’ll get more info about their gaming platform.
