While we’re still testing the waters when it comes to tourism after Covid, experts predict two rising trends: local and solo traveling. Other experts claim that people will choose road trips over plane travel in the upcoming months. Whatever the case is, flexibility is key when planning ahead.

Travel bloggers know best. As we look forward to our next vacation here at Top Pop Today, we take note of some of the biggest, most prominent bloggers. Most recently we’ve tuned into Brooke Saward’s travel blog, World of Wanderlust. Amassing a staggering half a million followers on Instagram alone, Saward’s platform offers tips, hacks, and advice that will upgrade your vacation.

Originally from Tasmania, Australia, this past year Saward’s travels have been reduced to more local adventures. According to the seasoned traveler, 90% of her travels have been on her own, documenting her trips and capturing the scenery by herself. A solo-traveler enthusiast, Saward says that traveling solo means sharpening your problem-solving skills.

“The scariest part is actually booking the ticket,” she remarked once in an interview with Redbrick. “When you land, you will quickly become a problem-solver and there’s nothing you can’t overcome”.

“Before I started travelling solo I was a very shy, introverted person,” admits Saward. “But when you are forced into situations that you need to figure out yourself (often with limited time), you really grow into yourself and come out of your shell. Solo travel is single-handedly the best thing I have done in my life so far.”

The advantages of solo traveling are great and include stepping out of your comfort zone, having more freedom to do as you wish, and getting to know yourself better. Looking to give it a try? Head, first, to World of Wanderlust’s solo travel guides, and follow Saward on Instagram for some travel inspiration.

The past year has seen most of us sheltered at home, and with travel restrictions still taking place— the future of vacations still isn’t clear. And yet, there’s a chosen few among us who shape their reality with greater freedom, carving some time off and treating life as a playground of possibilities rather than a set of restrictions. Such is Michelle Halpern’s philosophy. An LA-based travel guru, her motto is: “Live Like it’s the Weekend”. And boy does she put her money where her mouth is.

After leaving a corporate job in fashion at the end of 2015, Halpern discovered an alternative to a 9-to-5 job: travel blogging. She has since visited over 40 countries, inspiring others to take a leap of faith and live by their own rules. “For me, living like it’s the weekend means saying yes to opportunities and invitations because I have the freedom to do so,” says Halpern. “It means taking spur-of-the-moment adventures to discover something new and beautiful because I don’t have to ask anyone else’s permission.”

Her adventures include anything from vacations on exotic shores, where the dress code is bikinis and flowy dresses, to mountain hikes, where she’s seen sporting a beanie and a pair of hiking boots. “Sometimes I feel bipolar in the things I love about travel,” she admitted in a recent Instagram post. “By now you know I love a bougie design-centric hotel or cafe, but I also love waking up at sunrise to catch the light coming up over the mountains with not a soul in sight just as much.”

Her multi faceted approach to travel also meant she had an open mind when it came to traveling in times of the pandemic. According to Halpern, 2020 has taught her to appreciate local travel (in her case, meaning California). “This year made me appreciate how much there is to explore in my own backyard and it showed me that even when travel fully opens back up again, I don’t need to take a 13-hour flight to arrive somewhere incredible,” she wrote in another blog post. “There are still so many destinations on my own California bucket list, not to mention just a short drive away in other states.”

Her optimistic approach and YOLO attitude is just the kind of energy we need in 2021.

Traveling is always changing and evolving. There are new trends around travel every year, and some of them stay with us for a long time while others go away almost immediately. What can we expect from travel in 2020? Here are three of the trends that will be everywhere.

Micro Hotels

The concept of micro hotels aims travelers who need a break from technology and connectivity in their daily lives. These hotels are perfect for solo travelers and all the people who want to calm and reset their minds and bodies. They are typically located somewhere in nature, away from cities and crowds.

Eco-Friendly Travels

Tourists are becoming increasingly aware of the impact their travels have on our planets. In the future, starting in 2020, we’ll see more people being conscious of this and trying to balance the negative effect of their travels in any way they can.

Surrounded by Nature

Hotels that can offer a piece of green space around their property will be especially popular. Whether that’s a flower garden, a farm, or some other piece of nature, that’s exactly what people are craving.

Exploring New Destinations

Traveling to lesser-known destinations in order to prevent the negative effects mass tourism has on the big, popular cities and places will be trendy next year. Eco-friendly destinations will be especially popular.

Technology

The role technology has on travel will only continue to grow. We’re already used to looking up recommendations about places to visit and things to do at a certain destination, and this industry will keep developing.

Slow Travel

In 2020, we’ll finally learn to slow down and stop trying to see as many landmarks in a short period of time. More and more travelers agree that it’s important to slow down and think of the environment while enjoying the moment at any given time during the trip.

Entertainment

An ideal trip in 2020 should offer a number of different activities and attractions to choose from. Since we typically work a lot and don’t have too much free time, traveling is an opportunity to try something new and have fun.

Pets

A number of travelers who put their pets’ needs as a priority keeps growing. More and more people choose destinations based on the accommodation and activities available for their pets.

Grandkids

A growing number of grandparents will travel with their grandkids in 2020, which helps them feel young again.

Havana is not only one of the most popular cities in Cuba, but it is also one that combines history, tradition and culture. You can’t actually expect to see a modern life in Cuba, but the people who live there are so welcoming that you’ll never want to leave.

Take A Ride In The Colorful Cars

These old-fashioned cars are a must when you visit the city. They are all colorful and gorgeous. You will have so much fun going around town with a unique pink Cadilac from the 70s, or maybe even a car from the 50s.

Get A Drink

You can’t go to Havana and leave without having a drink in one of the traditional Cuban bars.

Plaza de la Revolución

Plaza de la Revolucion is a huge place, where you’ll see an even bigger installation with the face of Che Guevara. So many tourists mark it as the first attraction on their list in Havana. It’s great for taking pictures and just enjoying the sights.

Visit The San Carlos Fortress

Couples who travel together, stay together. Keep that in mind when you go wander around the most romantic cities in the world. The list hasn’t changed too much throughout the years. These four gems will make you fall in love all over again.

Venice

There isn’t a single doubt that Venice was made for lovers. This unique city in Italy offers long trips in a gondola, pizza, gelato, and stunning views. If you are traveling in 2019 with your loved one, we strongly recommend that you visit Venice and the surrounding islands.

Cape Town

Cape Town offers somewhat of an escape from reality. There are numerous reasons why it’s considered to be one of the most romantic cities on earth; the magical views are on top of that list.

Jaipur

With the vibrant architecture, unique tradition and welcoming people, Jaipur is the best spot for a getaway.

If you’ve noticed the appearance of more and more vacation photos on your Instagram feed, know that you’re not the only one. Traveling is more popular among young people than ever before and they are not only doing it for leisure.

According to a 2016 study, around half of millennial travelers do it with an intention to acquire higher education, learn new languages, and do volunteer work. On the other hand, one in three people aged 18 to 34 admitted to Booking.com that they “travel more and try more first-time travel experiences so they can post new pictures on their social media.”

More and more millennials are finding a way to make travel a part of their life and professional development. They may travel abroad to work in another country or they move to a country with a lower living standard while keeping their job and doing it remotely. Some even make travel their career, posting their experiences on blogs and social media and getting compensated for it. Whichever path they choose, there’s a good reason millennials are called the “travel generation” and that is more obvious in 2018 than ever before.
