]]>The use of artificial intelligence in the music industry raised some eyebrows in recent months, but it seems YouTube is getting ready to hop on the AI train. They’re working with major studios to develop an AI tool that can mimic the voices of our favorite musicians.
According to Billboard’s new report, YouTube wants to launch a new artificial intelligence tool that will allow creators to make videos using the voices of popular recording artists. They were planning to debut it during the Made on YouTube event in September, but the plan never came to fruition because they’re still to ink deals with record labels.
Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group are negotiating licensing deals with YouTube, but nothing has been decided just yet. They’d have to sign legal agreements with YouTube which would cover voice rights for the beta version of this AI tool, while a separate agreement would be required for its wide launch.
None of this would be possible without the artists giving permission for their voices to be used, and some of them are pretty resistant to the idea. Several high-profile artists openly spoke against AI in recent months, including Drake, Sting, and Ice Cube.

]]>The recent trend of social media influencers like Jake Paul participating in boxing matches as a way to drum up clout, interest, and profit has reached its inevitable conclusion in a Florida boxing event that made a huge splash in some circles and barely registered in others. We’re talking about Social Gloves: Battle of the Platforms.
What was it? Well, two famous social media influencers—one who came up on YouTube (Austin McBroom) and one who gained his fame on TikTok (Bryce Hall)—took their personal beef to the boxing ring in order to see who will come up victorious. This comes after McBroom accused Hall of being “too scared to fight” last December.
This particular match points to two trends happening recently in pop culture. One is the rise of TikTok and its own group of influencers—who are as disparaged by their detractors as they are loved by their fans for the same choreographed dances and paparazzi-ed outings—that can be seen as a threat to YouTubers, a more “established” influencer group.
Then there’s the convergence of social media influencer beef and live broadcast boxing matches which began with the Logan Paul vs. KSI fights in 2018 and is continuing to this day.
Will any real beef get squashed and a particular social media platform come out victorious as a result of the match? Probably not. But it’s pretty likely you’ll be able to see more of these types of boxing matches in the future.

]]>We can always count on YouTube to put us in a good mood when we’re feeling low and that was especially true this year. Our favorite stars on YouTube kept us laughing and dancing through 2020 and gave us a bunch of amazing viral videos along the way.
YouTube’s list of top trending videos is here and it features a couple of pretty familiar names. Dave Chappelle led the way with a powerful speech that he delivered during one of his stand-up specials. He was joined by several Hollywood stars, including John Krasinski, Ricky Gervais, and the cast of Saturday Night Live.
YouTube’s top music videos of the year were mostly released by hip-hop artists. Drake and Future took the first spot with “Life Is Good”, while the rest of the list featured the likes of Lil Baby, DaBaby, Roddy Ricch, and Cardi B.
YouTube also shared the lists of top creators, both old and new. MrBeast, best known for throwing elaborate and expensive stunts took No. 1 spot as YouTube’s top creator, while Minecraft-themed channel Dream was named as the top breakout creator.

According to Hyperbeast, Pinkfong’s hit, “Baby Shark” has surpassed Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber’s “Despacito” making it the most-watched video on the platform.
At the end of October, the song hit 7,042,720,458 views, while Fonsi’s successful hit had 7,038,330,283. And according to TIME, “Despacito” was considered the song of the summer in 2017.
“Baby Shark” began as a children’s songs by Smart Study, a company for younger audiences in South Korea, in November 2015. After it was successful in South Korea, the song was translated to English in 2016, before becoming a worldwide hit.
The song is only 90 seconds, but it led to branded merchandise, books, and a live tour.
The song became such a craze in South Korea that popular bands like Red Velvet, Girls’ Generation, and Blackpink incorporated it into their concerts.
The YouTube video inspired the hashtag #BabySharkChallenge that even inspired Cardi B and Josh Groban to join in.
And according to The Guardian, the tune is so relentless that three prison workers in Oklahoma were charged with prisoner cruelty, citing that the workers made the prisoners stand and listen to the song on repeat for two hours straight.

]]>A couple of months after introducing its Explore tab that allowed us to discover new music, YouTube is expanding its influence in the music world with its newly-launched global charts.
The main idea behind this innovation is allowing YouTube users to “directly engage with the most popular music from 57 countries around the world.” In addition to seeing which songs and artists are trending in your own country, you can use this new feature to explore global music trends everywhere from Germany to South Africa.
The chart section offers insight into several different categories, including top songs, top music videos, and top artists in your home country—or another countries around the world. It’s a pretty interesting feature which allows you to see how global trends differ from country to country.
YouTube isn’t the only media platform trying to expend its reach by introducing its own charts. Back in 2019, Rolling Stone introduced a series of charts in an attempt to compete with Billboard, but the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard 200 are still used as the main indicator of sales and streams in the music industry.

]]>YouTube’s new service, YouTube Music, lets its users switch between listening to a song and watching the music video with no interruptions.
With a single tap within the app, you can now go back and forth between listening to the song and watching its video, and it should always pick up at the exact right spot, with no pause. There’s an option to turn this off if you’d rather stick to the audio instead.
Apparently, YouTube has matched over five million songs to their corresponding videos in order to make this feature work. They had an advantage as the main YouTube platform is the place where most of the music videos are published.
“Imagine listening to a new track by your favorite artist in the YouTube Music app and having the ability to seamlessly switch over to watch the music video — no pauses, no interruptions, just a simple transition that keeps the music flowing. That’s exactly what we’re introducing! Today, YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium subscribers can now make a seamless transition between a song and its music video for uninterrupted listening and watching,” YouTube Music product manager Brandon Bilinski wrote on the company’s blog.
YouTube Music has updated in several other ways recently. The service now offers Offline Mixtape, a feature that enables you to download songs and integrates them with Google Home smart speakers.
The audio streaming app is available in 62 countries to millions of users.
